technology The Glorious PC master race thread

Hopefully someone can help me with this: more recently I find that my PC is no longer able to run high-end games as well as it used to (or at least specific games?). I used to be able to run BF4 on near max settings, but now at the same settings I'm experiencing stuttering issues (I've been told the game is actually very well optimized for PC now).

I'm unsure what is causing this. Some notable changes from then and now with my PC is the fact that my C: Drive (SSD) is nearly full (ranges from ~4-1GB remaining) with about 19GB being reserved for RAM backup, and the HDD in which my games are stored has gone from nearly empty to more than half full. How I use the PC, I typically always have Chrome open which ends up using about half of the memory I have (8GB total RAM) but I've done this before. Have started using two monitors at a certain point but games are still run on only one monitor; unsure whether this would significantly affect game performance but from memory I was sure that BF4 still ran fine.

BF4 loves RAM, so close Chrome if it's actually using up half your available RAM. SSDs also don't perform quite as well almost full, so you might want to free up some space there.

Having more than one monitor enabled on any modern GPU is going to have a very minimal impact on your fps, especially if you're running a game in full screen mode on one of the monitors.

I only got a new GPU. I got the GTX 970 and I am hyped to see it in action. I was going to get two in the future, but my case is too small.

Oh, so you ended up getting the 970? Nice. Lotta GPU for $330.

First off the games like Metro Last Light run at 80fps in 1080p, I don't plan on getting a 4K monitor for like.....never. But it can do 4k with one card and will save me power. If I want one more, I need a new mobo and PSU. But right now with all I saved this year before taxes, I'm satisfied with this card.

May I recommend the Intel Core i5-4690K and Asus Sabertooth Z97?  :adorkable:

That sounds awesome, though the CPU is not a worry for me, since my current CPU will work fine for this card. I am not really doing a major upgrade until Windows 10 comes out and gets a positive reception. I know 8.1 is more powerful than 7, but I'm passing on W8.

I have that CPU and mobo combination, used it for my first build and for what I do it handles the workload very well.

He's uploading videos at 60fps 1080p and he's rendering every day, so I can see why he did this.

Oh yeah, Intel's LGA2011 Core i7s are absolutely great for heavy productivity like that.

Right now playing Sonic Generations(I am shocked it's sorta hard collecting red rings and some levels) and it looks sexy at max settings. The most my card was able to output was Alien Isolation at max settings.

I felt the same way when I upgraded from a dinky little laptop to a desktop. Everything looked so glorious.

Twilight(Alicorn)

Rainbow Dash

Sunset Shimmer

and I also have their human counterparts as stickers on my case.

I've been thinking on and off about putting Twilight's butt symbol on one of the windows. I already have a "GabeN Inside" sticker above the Phanteks logo.

What is your video card as it can be that the two monitors are hogging up it's resources. I'd recommend fully disconnecting that 2nd monitor from the video card if I were you.

GTX 670 with 2GB VRAM. Does it really have a significant effect if the game is only being run on fullscreen on one monitor? I made the assumption that it wouldn't.

I'm thinking that perhaps the components I need to upgrade are: RAM, and SSD with larger capacity. I tried searching for a way to move the reserve RAM storage from the SSD to the HDD, but so far have not found a way to do it.

May upgrade GPU next year or year after to one with more than 2GB VRAM.

BF4 running Ultra with AA at 1080p will use more than 2GB.

Reserve RAM storage, you mean the swap file? Keep that on the SSD -- especially if you might be running out of RAM. Last thing you want to do is be paging off to an HDD.

I might have come across a little bit unclear -- there should not be a significant impact to your framerate running multi-monitor, especially if you're only running the game on a single monitor.

I remember when I got mine done and fired up Fallout 3 at 60FPS/Max Settings for the first time after my old PC could barely handle it at a steady 40FPS+ on nearly bottomed out settings, it was kind of surreal.

No Logos(yet), but I named my rig Luna because it glows blue.

Heads, all three Batman: Arkam games and the DLC for $10.

Ah. It seems I found the problem which I'm not sure is obvious or not. More recently I tended to have a Youtube video playing as I was gaming; there was a significant framerate difference between not playing one and playing one. I guess I overestimated my PC/underestimated Chrome/underestimated resources taken up by running video.

Did anyone else play Arkham Asylum on the PC and run into that glitch where the game drops to almost unplayable framerates in the Scarecrows levels?

I'm 60FPSing the game just fine any other time, but both those areas choked it down to as low as 17FPS(when the next area loaded it dropped to 5FPS for a couple minutes until it leveled out and jumped back up to it's normal 60FPS)

I need some help here. My evga 970 SC is well...........mentally ill. FPS taking dives left and right and some how Metro 2033 redux scored 79fps average when I see no difference in gameplay.

Yes the card is seated properly

The drivers are latest from EVGA's site, not Nvidia experience

I did a clean install
