From what I heard, Chrysalis was inspired by the works of Junko Mizuno and Hideshi Hino, what other plot is there? Is she inspired by Borg, Xenomorphs and the Covenant from Halo? What was the inspiration for an attack on a royal wedding? And how similar is Shining Armor to worf?

I suspect they were inspired of the horrible pony monsters of Super Filly Adventures and Story of the Blanks fan games

A long time ago I thought they were antrhopmoporphisations of horse flies. 

 

But I suppose the main inspiration would be the changeling of Gaelic mythos. A faery that would replace a human child with one of its own. You could take the extra step in saying that Chrysalis herself is based off of the Succubus. Heck, one of the writers joked about having written a draft about a succubus escaping from a mirror and impersonating Celestia. That's probably how we got Chrysalis & Molestia (R.I.P.).
