movies/tv What do you think of Happy Honda Days ads?

Every December Honda has a big advertising campaign and this year Honda has a nostalgic twist. They are airing a series of six commercials featuring toys from decades ago animated using the stop motion method. My personal favorite of the bunch is this one.

This article on Honda's website describes the campaign in greater detail. http://www.honda.com/newsandviews/article.aspx?id=8017-en

All I can say is this is an improvement over last year's December advertising campaign which featured spots by Michael Bolton. In case you forgot:

Who knows...maybe a decade or two from now we'll see Twilight Sparkle in a Honda ad! :D

I liked the Bolton one from last year but yeah they are really making a comeback this year.

I think they're boring. I'm not into cars to be honest.

All my life needed was a sense of someplace to go. I don't believe that one should devote his life to morbid self-attention. I believe that someone should become a person like other people.

Hooray for Gen-X/Boomer pandering. >_>

But...but I'm a Gen Xer. :(

Anyway, almost all the toys used in this set of commercials have been rebooted since their original debut. So don't act like these ads don't strike a chord with young whippersnappers like you as well. :P

Stupid car companies, pandering to the people old enough to be able to afford to buy new cars.

I'm not making any slights at the generation. It's just that the commercials to me are no different than the Michael Bolton ads from last year. There's really no substance to them. The idea is bare-bones simple. They're just getting them to climb over the cars and say "Honda makes a great gift" and not really do much else but stand around and and use their name recognition to try to get people hooked.

Nostalgia really does work as a marketing tool, especially in this season, but really all of the ads are just repetitive, boring, and simple, especially to anyone watching who might be outside of the customer base they were targeting. It's really no different to me than when a company gets a washed-up old celebrity to cash in on their past name recognition instead of actually doing something with them or their product.

I'd be saying the exact same thing if it had been Sonic or SpongeBob pushing their product.

Or Fluttershy?  ;)  Fair enough.  The name of the game in advertising is to stand out and get viewers attention by any possible means within the rules.  I wonder how much Honda has had to pay Hasbro, Mattel, and other other copyright holders to use their products in this series of ads.

It just seems desperate to me, Honda cars are okay I guess but to be fair my taste in cars is a bit on the expensive side at least for the most part. But then again there are some companies that have commercials that I like but am not too big on their product, a good example being Jack in The Box. I don't know if it is my taste buds changing, me getting increasingly grossed out by what is put in fast food but it just dosen't seem to taste as good as it used to but their commercials are hilarious.
