Just watched a Movie called Deliver us from evil. I have been waiting a long time to see trhis as i was reccomended it by someone. It just came on Netflix. It is a documentary about the coverup of sexual molestation and rape of children in the catholic church. I would strongly reccomend everyone over the age of 16 to watch this movie, but be warned i am a 24 year old male who usaully has no problems with movies but during this film i cried several times and finished the movie feeling extreme anger and somewhat sick to my stomach. I think this is an extremely important movie that everyone should see.

Deliver Us from Evil revolves around the actions of Oliver O'Grady whom somehow was ordained a priest despite having had a clear history of being a pedophile. His later actions being covered up by his overseeing Bishop.

The documentary is very disturbing and contains graphic descriptions of sexual assaults on children and young women.

I wouldn't recommend it to anyone young, or anyone who may have a weak stomach.

I also wouldn't recommend it to anyone who wants an accurate and unbiased view of the sex abuse scandal, Catholic theology, and history.

The motives behind the documentary go way beyond bringing awareness to the horrible events that took place, and subsequently results in misleading statements, absurd accusations and revisionist history.

To begin, the documentary does a poor job of maintaining it's focus point. It bounces around seamlessly from victims recounting the events to charismatic speakers demanding a liberalization of the Church, to misinformed theologians and historians, and to interviews with the sicko himself, O'Grady.

There's little structure.

As far as the content itself goes, the historians and theologians interviewed quite possibly couldn't know less about what they are talking about.

As long as it does not make sweeping statements that all Catholics are like that.

This is also very much an issue I found with this documentary. It represents Catholics in a horribly inaccurate manner going as far to say that we believe ourselves to be superior because we have the Eucharist and that we believe pedophilia by a priest is "normal" and no worse than him having sex with a consenting woman.

How they came to these conclusions deserves a documentary of it's own.

Historical issues:

I found two major historical errors in this film.

First and foremost is the claim that the Eucharist was originally thought by the early Church to be little more than a symbolic image of Christ which could be consecrated even by the laity.

Anyone who has taken the time to read the writings of the early Christians such as Saint Justin Martyr would know that the early Christians believed in the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist and that it was to never be consecrated by laymen.

They then go on to say how Communion was "ritualized" by the "later" Church leaders as a means of controlling the populace.

This is where bad history takes a turn into bad theology.

To support this claim of how the Eucharist was used to "control" they twist Catholic teachings and theology.

They accuse the Church of repressing all Catholics on pain of being banned from receiving Communion.

Giving the erroneous statement that Catholics believe a Catholic is condemned to Hell for even slightly disagreeing with Church teaching.

Additionally (and randomly) even implying that a Catholic can divorce and remarry so long as the second marriage is performed by a priest. Not only is this false - re-marriage is forbidden unless the first marriage has been annulled - but even if the first marriage had been annulled and the person re-married through a secular minister, the person would still be able to receive Communion so long as they did not have marital relations with their partner until being married in the Church.

The second error made is that they claim the Church has had major sex abuse scandals since the 4th century AD. This accusation is absurd. While there have been individual and small cases or allegations of sex abuse by clergy prior to the most recent scandal, it has in no way been the mass rapage the documentary tries to make it out to be.

Many other twistings of Catholic beliefs are presented in this film.

Such as claiming Catholics view priests as divine and that homosexuals are not permitted to receive communion if they have even the slightest sexual slip up.

This completely disregards Catholic belief and adherence to the First Commandment and the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

They also spend a great deal of time expressing their belief that clerical celibacy turns men into pedophiles and claims that the entire priesthood has been "sexualized" because of celibacy.

This is absurd, inaccurate and overall just a load of bullshit angry ex-Catholics want to throw at the Church.

Statistically speaking, you're more likely to be raped by your teacher in school than by a priest in a Church.

Most of this isn't even relevant to the apparent point of the documentary.

The documentary ends with some dramatic camera movements and images of Swiss Guards and other Vatican City security forces refusing to grant them access to the Vatican because they "wanted to give a letter to the Pope".

This refusal to throw away basic security measures on request is then presented as "more proof" that the Vatican did nothing to help the situation, completely disregarding the years Cardinal Josef Ratzinger spent working on the issue to make sure pedophiles are found and that no more pedophiles enter the priesthood.

I'd highly suggest that anyone interested in the topic go read a book on it. Ya know, paper with words on it?

This documentary will simply clutter your mind with misconceptions and inaccuracies.
