How would you feel about Derpy if she was potentially dangerous?

There's been some debate on whether she is mentally challenged or not. Some would argue that her appearance and original voice from The Last Roundup aren't enough to make that judgement, and for all we know, she just has a clumsy personality. Others might say she is challenged, and that's a good thing because it makes her different and enforces the message that individuals like her should be accepted (and I agree).

But sometimes, there are individuals that come along who, despite their cognitive disability, still do things that make the rest of their demographic look plain bad, like stalking, assault, rape, murder, etc.

Now for the sake of argument, let's just forget that FIM is a kids' show. And let's say Derpy did in fact have some kind of mental disorder, and it was so severe, it caused her to do one or more of those things I listed. She might not mean to harm any pony, yet she still does. In this case, we'll say she victimized one of the Mane Six.

Because ponies are scared to death of her, Twilight has no choice but to lock her away in a cell. And to make things even worse, no matter how much any pony tries to get through to her, Derpy doesn't understand that what she did was wrong. And she'll keep doing it as long as she's able to get near other ponies.

Would you hate her guts, or would you feel sympathetic towards her?

I could never hate a mentally ill or handicapped person, or pony, if they simply could not help themselves due to their condition. I am schizophrenic myself, and I know what it is like to lose control and do bad things because you just cannot see past your own pain and confusion.

I am not perfect in my forgiveness towards mentally ill and handicapped people, but I honestly believe that I SHOULD be. I have known and had friends who are ill or handicapped, and yes, when they cannot understand that what they have done/are doing is damaging to others, it gets hard to forgive.

But hell, I have been there and if it were not for the ton of pills I take each day and a monthly injection I would be potentially violent and dangerous.

It should be noted that schizophrenic, handicapped and people suffering from any mental abnormalities are more likely to be the VICTIMS OF VIOLENCE than the perpetrators of violent crimes.

In this case I think it's best for the society of Equestria to protect themselves from someone who is potentially dangerous. Whether Derpy understands what she did wrong or not is irrelevant; the safety of the people comes first. In a realm filled with magic I would strongly suggest seeking a cure or else a treatment that lowers the probability of dangerous outbursts, but if none can be found incarceration is the only option.

To be honest you should have just written this into some weird fanfic and not post it on a forum imo. It kind of seems like your insinuating that having a mental disorder makes someone more likely too do things ''like stalking, assault, rape, murder, etc.'' In fact how does have a mental disorder even come into this? People can do those sorts of things without mental disorders and more often than not they don't have one.

Not sure why this has struck a nerve for me, probably because A) I have a disorder myself and my brother is Autistic  B ) This is a kids show and if you want it to be otherwise you should write your own fanfic C) It's boring / tiring seeing these weird topic ideas based on MLP. What person thinks, you know what I am going to ask if people would like derpy if she stalked, murdered and raped other ponies.... Seriously why do people have to taint a decent show with their dark and weird ideas then post it on a public forum for people age 13+...

It helps if you don't take things out of context. Here's what I actually said.

"[…] sometimes, there are individuals that come along who, despite their cognitive disability, still do things that make the rest of their demographic look plain bad, like stalking, assault, rape, murder, etc."

I'm not painting everyone in this group with the same brush. Any group you can think of will have bad examples, and like it or not, people with mental disorders is no exception.

I'll have you know that my mother is a paranoid schizophrenic. She's put her own health at risk many times, mainly because she doesn't acknowledge she has a problem and refuses help when it's offered. And there have been instances when I was little where she attacked or scared other people. For this reason, I have a hard time getting along with her. But you know something? If I hadn't been there for her, she'd probably be dead by now. So if you think I'm putting you or anyone else down with similar conditions, you're mistaken.

Second, this isn't about wanting to change a kids' show. It's merely talking about a hypothetical scenario. That's the whole point of forum discussions. We're not bound by the same parameters that the show's writers and producers have set for themselves. We have every right to exercise that freedom provided our thread content isn't against the rules, and this isn't. People have entertained the idea of having romantic relationships with ponies here. I think it's disturbing, but I'm not going to tell anyone not to make threads about it.

Would she be considered a villainous character in the show if she committed these crimes, even if she was ignorant of what's right and wrong?

I think it's natural for most people to have sympathy towards her if a mental condition was made known.  If there was absoluely no way to help her, she would pretty much have to be locked away somewhere for the protection of others, and all you could do was feel sorry for her.  What a horrible thought.  I like Derpy.  Couldn't you have started a topic about rainbows or something happy instead?

It's really a matter of perspective. If someone with that condition hurt somebody you cared about, you'd probably see them as evil regardless if they didn't know what they were doing. On the other hand, the blame can also be passed onto persons or institutions responsible for their care if such an event happened, making them look like even bigger villains. I once read about a nursing home where a resident with dimentia attacked and killed a roommate. The staff could have done something to prevent it, but like most homes, they didn't give a shit, and their negligence cost the life of somebody's mother/grandmother.

Personally, I'm glad to see there are schizophrenics who recognized they had a condition and took all the right measures to ensure they don't end up putting themselves or others at risk. We wouldn't have the knowledge we do about these cases without their experiences to learn from. It's the ones who have this narcissistic attitude about it that I have a problem with, because no amount of talking will convince them they have a problem and they refuse to seek help. If you gave them enough resources, they could practically be a Batman villain.

So it ultimately depends on how Derpy is characterized. We don't know a whole lot about her, despite her one speaking cameo with Rainbow Dash or the part she had for the Equestria games. She seems like a nice pony. When you look at history though, the same could also be said about some of the worst serial killers.

Anyway, I'm not a very happy guy, so….. maybe in a few months. Lol.

Wow.

Such an flamingly ignorant post I hardly know what to say.

Refusal to acknowledge ones condition isn't narcissism, it's delusion. A good friend is skitzo. For years he's denied that fact, despite taking fistful of anti psychotics every day.

It's a symptom of the illness, not an attitude of the sufferers.

I agree w KatonRyu & the Vulcans.  The needs of the many must outweigh the needs of the one.  This is why General Ross was always chasing the Hulk in the old Marvel comics (quit reading them late 1980s).  They eventually came to understand Banner = Hulk, but the Hulk was just too dangerous & had to be stopped.

If Derpy was hurting others she would have to be controlled.  I would feel sorry for her -but more sorry for her victims.

Having the delusion of being mentally healthy is one thing, but being an ass is another. That's not a symptom.

And my mother is just that. She's a complete ass, and I know that because I can't talk to her about anything. She always has to be right.
