Megas 27,685 February 13, 2015 Share February 13, 2015 (edited) Things I like: More worldbuilding opportunities. more opportunities to build side characters. Friends Forever in general. Can do things that the show may not be able to do Things I hate: The RD Micro. Sometimes the mane characters tend to feel like caricatures of themselves(especially Pinkie, Fluttershy and RD). The Main series has fallen on hard times. Sometimes they get anyone to write certain comics(like with the Micro series), rather than ones genuinely interested in working on the show, which meant some characters/pairs got fucked over entirely. Some of the writers attitudes to criticism is off-putting What would I change: Give some of the writers working on FF a chance to work on the Main series. Less adventure arcs for the main series and more SoL. Make a RD Micro that isn't garbage Man I did a lot more whining than I thought :/ Edited February 13, 2015 by Megas75

Pinkdasher7 27 February 14, 2015 Share February 14, 2015 I LIKE THE MLP COMIC, with the loosely constructed Quest. The comic series is so open too new topics of story! I especially love the one where Queen Cyrsilis kid nap the cutie mark crusaders too get.... Opps! Things I like: More worldbuilding opportunities. more opportunities to build side characters. Buck Testa 5,505 February 16, 2015 Share February 16, 2015 The thing I love about the comics is how they get to build and flesh out characters that are otherwise left pretty bland in the series, Luna and Cadence in particular. I also like how it isn't just a rehash of what the show is doing and taking it in their own direction based on who the characters are and how they would react to certain situations. The downside is there are some TRULY cringe worthy issues that I've come across. Dips in both art quality and writing are so glaring that its almost unreadable at times. Micro series in particular has some real stinkers. Then issues like Luna's micro comes up and I totally forget the bad and laugh my proverbial flank off at how glorious it is. And the shipping moments, gosh these things are just begging me to ship certain characters and I am MORE than happy to oblige. The reference humor, forth wall breaks, and the genuinely brilliant "fan pandering" are other major plus's for me. I like it when they try to say "hey we get you guys and we know what you want, here's a nod to that" And then there are issues where I go "what kind of lazy drivel is this?" I suppose its based on who's working on it that day but hopefully they can find what works and what doesn't and make it even better in the future. I'd love some of these issues to be integrated into the show. http://www.fimfiction.net/user/Billy%20G%20Gruff http://billyggruff.deviantart.com/ https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPVpSXbUpDYTcaFHTPiPjYA
Sidral Mundet 1,666 March 2, 2015 Share March 2, 2015 What I like about the comics is they can be far less restricted than the show can be at times, which is a dual edged sword. For example the comics can have a well paced action adventure story that the show simply doesn't have the time to show or the comics could have absolutely pointless comedic filler for 13 pages and barely move the story along to pad out the issue. You can focus on minor characters but then lose focus on the main ones. Though what I do think the comics need is a focus/purpose outside of being simply a spinoff media. Logic is the beginning of wisdom, not the end.

GuillermoGage 246 May 22, 2015 Share May 22, 2015 (edited) I really dislike it when they draw the snouts of the mares really tiny, and draw the ponies in such a super-deformed style that doesn't even look equine, even moreso than the show. Agnes Garbowska and sometimes Amy Mebberson are super-guilty of this. Agnes especially. The Trixie Diamond Heist comic had them looking like cats for every front-facing scene. Sometimes I put a piece of paper over some front-view face panels that they drew, and trace over their faces, but make the snouts bigger so they have the look of sticking out more. I take a look at that traced drawing and I see that their drawing would be so much better if they didn't make the ponies so diminutive and deformed-looking, like hooved cats with manes instead of something at least vaguely equine-looking. EDIT: several minutes later. I must also say that I do admire the watercolor-y way she has the characters colored in. I actually liked the Spike and Princess Celestia comic she made. Since those characters aren't little mares, my snout issue wasn't as relevant. What I do like is pretty much anything drawn and written by Andy Price and Katie Cook. Katie Cook sometimes draws little one page, two page comics sometimes, and I like how she draws more defined snouts on the mares. They really look like some variation of horse, like Applejack could bend her neck down, point her snout to the ground, and eat some hay or grass. And eat it, like a pony. FlutterDash4072 189 May 25, 2015 Share May 25, 2015 They can be a great source of world building and characterization if they're done right. Like with the Fiendship mini-series, we got two great issues for Sombra and Chrysalis that gave them wonderful backstories. But in the same series, we got a couple of garbage issues that are just better off being forgotten. Just like with the show, good writers will occasionally put out bad issues, but there are some writers they've had who didn't even try to hide the fact that they were just there for the paycheck. The comic staff could probably use some fresh blood to be honest. 1 Signature made by Wheatley
Steve Piranha 29,428 May 31, 2015 Share May 31, 2015 What I like, about the comics is mainly the liberty the authors have to make the stories, which many are really good and entertaining. They also make stories that wouldn't make it in the show otherwise. Most art styles are good, and even the most cartoonish ones works well with comedic issues, despite the criticism of many readers What I don't like: The freedom is also a double edged sword, which, while they brough many good stories, they also brough awful ones, like Friends Forever 1. Some stories are just dull and a huge waste of time (Spike micro). While I don't mind deviating a bit from the show canon, as some works well (Luna's comic personality), others are far too evident they don't know a dime about the source material (Siren's Fiendship is Magic). Another thing it bothers me is the flanderization some characters suffer and others are just there with no purpose at all HHMMM, kinda looks like the comics has more flaws than virtues, but I assure you that's not the case. As in my opinion, the virtues are more consistent withing good issues, and the flaws are what makes bad issues..... bad Sig by Discords
Concerned Bystander 2,902 June 26, 2015 Share June 26, 2015 I tend to get the TP collections as opposed to the actual comics, and for the greater part I've found them to be at least on a par with, and frequently better than, the cartoon itself. I love the fact that they're clearly aimed towards a more mature audience without losing the innocence that makes them appeal to the original target audience. There is no way that the key target demographic of the franchise would pick up on references to things like Bladrerunner, Conan the Barbarian, the Shining or Invasion of the Bodysnatchers to name but a few of the multitude of cultural references that are shoehorned into the pages of these comics. Obviously some of them are better than others, with the stories created by Katie Cok and Andy Price standing proud at the very pinnacle. The main FiM series on the whoe has been great, the Pony Tales series was also very good, and the Friends Forever series, although to my mind the weakest of the three nevertheless contains some great stories and amazing artwork.
