Any Pro-Wrestling Fans Around?

Well, i can't say that about the people i mentioned. Cena is the most clean wrestler you can think of, AJ is a loving family father with "now" 4 children and Shinsuke-san (yes, i like to call him that) learned to be respectful to everybody in new japan.   I can never see those 3 guys, damaging their legacies.

I agree  that the three wrestlers you mentioned wouldn't dream of damaging their legacies at this point.

I feel that the newer generation is much more in control of themselves both mentally and emotionally than the older wrestlers of the past.

well, you might be right, but i wouldn't say that from every great superstar of this era.

CM Punk for example, one of my favorites ever since his time in ring of honor and also in WWE. Great in the ring, great on the mic, just wonderful. But ever since he quit in 2014 and especially, he seems to make alot of enemies. He pushed his UFC fight for almost 2 years, just to get his ass kicked, has a fallout with his long time best friend colt cabana and he just seems bitter about the fact, that he never main evented Wrestlemania.

I mean yeah, every WWE wrestler wants to main event the biggest show. But sometimes, things don't happen the way like they should. It's hard, but he shouldn't be so angry about it.

Yeah, CM Punk sure doesn't seem to be making the tremendous impact everyone thought he would when he left WWE.

I have a feeling he "could" be back in WWE eventually if he can't find anything better to do with his life because, as

The Million Dollar Man says "Everyone's got a price."

Although, he does also write comic books now so, that might be his new gig if this whole MMA thing doesn't pan out.

I heard that. As far as i know, he will draw a future Thor Comic for Marvel, so that's actually a big deal, since Thor is a big comic.

I still like Punk because i know he is a funny guy and he also a big nerd like me, when it comes to movies and video games. But he has certain flaws, i can't overlook.

Wow, that's pretty impressive. I only saw that comic he wrote on the UFC documentary they did for him.

You mean "certain flaws" like being a jerk to fans?

No, he isn't a jerk to fans, except when he is doing his heel shtick, but that's what wrestlers should do.

What i mean is, he is a bit melodramatic and he can get easily offended, when things don't go his way.

Well, that was more Punks frustration about the situation he was in, in 2011. Can you blame him, that a hundred fans highjack you at 5 in the morning on the airport, for an autograph? I mean yeah, they like to make their fans happy, but they don't get alot of private time, so atleast let them be at peace for atleast a few hours.

Sorry, I was being sarcastic.

Those people who do stuff that and still have the nerve to call themselves "fans" drive me crazy.

I hate pushy fans. They give fans who just like meeting their icons, a bad name.

Well, try seeing things from his POV.  Seven years in the company and he gets leapfrogged by Batista and the Rock. I'd feel underappreciated. It also doesn't help that WWE seems to have been making jabs at him since he left. Like sending him his termination papers on his wedding day, among others.

As to the UFC fight? Yeah, it was a bad move to start as a pro on his first fight, against a BJJ brown belt at that, but even in defeat he was gracious and inspiring, and by the looks of things, wishes to continue.

But I do agree that splitting with Colt may have been a step too far. Seems like he's letting his legal battle w/ a ring side doctor (backed by WWE) get in the way. And that's not something to toss a friendship over.

Colt was seen backstage at Raw. Punk feared that would jeopardize his standing in his legal battle w/ the ring side doctor.

I cancelled the WWE Network last year, stupid network.

And they still keep sending me e-mails saying that they want me back.

Has this happened to any of you?

I want to send them an e-mail saying 'Get stuffed and leave me alone'.

Just to get away a bit from the Punk incidents and everything, a bit food for thought.

I have recently looked where Wrestling is standing on TV in the US and boy dosen't it look good. The WWE, while Raw and Smackdown are still one of the most watched show on USA Network, are way behind the expectations of the channel and get constant threats from the higher ups, to leave them.

TNA are on Pop TV, a channel that only a handful of american citizens can get, which also reflects itself on the ratings.

Ring of Honor sometimes gets shown on the most unbelievable times, like at midnight from Sunday to Monday. How are they supposed to get ratings.

Finally New Japan on AXS TV, which sadly dosen't get watched, because of the xenophobic nature of certain americans, or because it's just too much "Wrasslin" for them.

Let us be honest here guys. Wrestling on TV dosen't draw anymore, because the general audience is just fed up and most TV Stations just don't care anymore about wrestling. If one of these promotions lose their station, they will have alot of problems finding a new one.

They should maybe get their own channels. Granted, WWE and New Japan have their own networks (WWE Network and NJPW World respectively) But Ring of Honor and TNA could be alot more difficult.

I think it has more to do w/ AXS not being a wildly available channel. I know I don't get it.  Though that could change when I switch to Direct TV next month.

But yeah. We are a niche market. Many things that were once popular don't have second comings.

Vaudeville theater was a fad.  Westerns were a fad. Fantasy movies were a fad (Anything outside of a J.R.R. Tolkein film does poorly at the box office). Disco was a fad. Karaoke shows (American Idol) were a fad.  The attitude era, and by extension all of wrestling, was a fad.

Despite it's atrocious booking and backstage ego stroking, WCW regularly got around 2.0 ratings. That's not far from what Smackdown used to do. Yet they got cancelled. AOL-Time Warner did not want wrestling. USA network might want the same.

The 3 hour format doesn't help. It may bring in ad revenue, but it's hurting the product. Stretching, padding and cramming all that material causes fans to get bored and burnt out. Why else do you think the Cruzierweights debut was saved till the third hour?

And last but not least, VKM still does things in a dated fashion. His way or the high way. Him and the rest of his higher ups are still trying to chase ghosts of their past, replicating past successes but in boring ways, instead of taking advantage of the TV-PG format to innovate.  It does seem to be changing now, but will any more come of this 'new era?'

The last nail in the coffin for the next boom period, is that there is no one who can compete w/ WWE. TNA, ROH & Lucha Underground are too small & too new.  The NWA is a shell of it's former self. Pretty much just a nationwide club of local Indys.  And the next largest company in NJPW is, well, in Japan. A lot of the context of the show has to change to suit American audiences, as well as relocating to the states. But if you do that, you change what was good in the first place. It's big in Japan. And it has to stay that way.  The same w/ CMLL & AAA in Mexico.

WCW had the old school heritage. ECW was groundbreaking & counter culture. We don't have these things anymore.

As for TNA & ROH? TNA is being kept afloat by Billy Corgan's bank account. Maybe if control is wrestled away from Dixie, it might have a chance at recovery. But let's face it. The brand is damaged goods. Mismanagement has screwed every opritunity it had at succsess. SPike TV was their best shot. They just had to follow a few rules. Among them A. No man on woman violence. B. No Vince Russo.  Guess which ones they broke?

It's worth about half of what WCW was at it's closure. And it was wrecked by the same dudes: Hogan. Bischoff. Russo. Just replace Turner w/ Carter. If WWE buys it, there's no way it's staying in business. Cause it's hemorrhaging money as is. Best shot is for them to wait for their Pop TV deal to burst, then get swept up by Sinclair broadcasting, ROH's parent company, and wait to get more potential viewers via syndication. It's also the most likely, as it was confirmed that Sinclair placed bids, while WWE showing interest was just hearsay. ROH is probably gonna stay on for a logn while, cause it's a perpetually ongoing show. It well continue, whilst others will end, and these channels need all the programming they can get, preferably without buying distribution rights to new ones.

On a much lighter note, today would've been the 99th birthday of El Santo, the father of modern Lucha Libre!

You know it's big when Google makes it a celebration.

That was a really really good read. And it's the sad truth and i say that for few years now. Wrestling, in the mainstream, was a fad, that actually almost ended in 1995, but kept itself relevant through the Attitude era and to some extent the Ruthless Agression Era. But as of now, you can really only cater to the hardcore fans, because the casual fans already saw everything, because, let's face it, everything has been done in wrestling.

As for promotions like New Japan, AAA or CMLL. While it would be cool if they could get some ground in the united states, i don't necessarily want them to become a product like WWE or TNA. I want them to stay their own thing. The problem is though, most casual fans are not interested in "fake fighting" by "vanilla midgets." They want to see a television programm, that revolves around Wrestling. If they do that, they will lose their local audience, because for the japanese/mexicans, Wrestling is still Wrestling and they are still kind of marky. You will take away the illusion with that.

I think WWE is heading towards a direction, where it's more or less, a very glorified Indy promotion, once Hunter takes over. Hunter has an incredibly old school look on wrestling, considering he was a big NWA guy during his teen years and i think he also wants more attention to the wrestling, then the things around. Is that good? Is that bad? Can't be sure. But it's worth to let him try, because Vince can't do it anymore.

There's a saying I've seen around, about how wrestling is viewed by the world.

  • In Canada, it's a tradition
  • In Mexico, it's a religion
  • In Japan, It's a sport.
  • In America, it's a joke.

From the gobbily gooker to hornswaggle to the golden truth. Things like these keep the american audience from taking it seriously.

But it isn't just that. It's cultural too. Probably a big reason why Jappanese wrestling differs from it's american counterpart and what both audiences seek. What's the number one sport in America? Football. What's the number one sport in Japan? It's actually Judo.

Japan's national pass time is a combat sport. America's is not. It's full contact. But it's not combative. Things like boxing, MMA & traditional wrestling just aren't of interest in the public eye. It also explains why wrestling took root in Mexico. They came from the warrior Aztec culture, where wars & duels to the death were common. Canada? Well Canada never quite had as big a regional scene as the states, but that also meant it didn't really have any targets for VKM to buy out and monopolize. Most of Canada's territories remained in tact, and thus, grew up separate from the WWWF monopolized America, the culture growing alongside it.

You know it's big when Google makes it a celebration.   www.google.com

That was quite the informative read. Excellent Job!  :D
