The championship was unified with another title in 2008.

Yeah, with the original IWGP heavyweight championship. That Styles would go on to hold.

You're thinking of the IWGP 3rd belt or IGF title. That's an odd one cause that was made when Lesnar was IWGP champ, left NJPW over pay, took the belt with him to Antonio Inoki's company IGF, who made it their own championship. He'd loose it to Angle, who'd loose it to IWGP Champ Nakamura in a unification bout.

It's kinda like when Flair was WCW champ, but got fired for refusing to become Sparticus. Went to WWE as the 'real world champ'. Came back, brought the belt back with him and since WCW crowned a new champ, that belt would become the WCW International title.

I haven't watched pro-wrestling since the mid-90's. It was way more fun to watch back in those days. The personalities they have now in the business aren't nearly as interesting.

This is probably the only thing related to WWE that I still like.

Wrestling can be *very* confusing.

Also, I just watched a match between Will Osprey & Matt Riddle & Riddle impressed me quite a bit.

Lot of hype behind Riddle. Normally WWE would stay away from him since his love of 420 makes RVD look like CM Punk. But the succsess of All In and ROH/NJPW at MSG have driven old man Vince back to his territory plundering ways.

I still think Riddle looks like a loser but his eclectic move set makes him interesting to watch.

I also wish he'd wear boots or at least tape his feet.

NXT Takeover Brooklyn 4 Spoilers

Spoiler

My first time ever seeing Matt Riddle was a crowd shot of him at NXT Takeover & I merely judged him by looking at his face.

I thought he looked like a surf bum.

That's probably intentional. Just like how every promo of his has to have the word 'Bro' in it. He looks a stoned beach comber, but he can legit kick your ass.

After reading up on Riddle that does seem to be the case.

I read someone on a wrestling forum say that his in-ring work is strong but his gimmick & character are both weak.

Probably why places like ROH, NJPW and Impact haven't bothered to sign him till recently.

I heard his name & got him confused with Tom Riddle from Harry Potter. :please:

Harry Potter characters probably don't wrestle besides maybe, Hagrid. :P

They should. Wizarding doesn't look like it pays very much.

WWE SummerSlam 2018 Spoilers

Spoiler

So, I guess Becky Lynch is a heel now.  :ooh:

A heel that I will continue to cheer no matter what because, she is one of the few wrestlers in WWE that I actually enjoy watching.

Hard to believe All In is less than two weeks away.

I love those "10 Pounds of Gold" videos. They're mini wrestling documentaries that also push storylines.

Major news from NJPW!

So Hiromu Takehashi has to vacate his Jr. Heavyweight belt due to that broken neck he got at the G1 Special. We'll be havign a tournament culminating at the King Of Pro Wrestling show to crown a new champ.

Announced matches are:

  • Omega vs. Ishii for the Heavyweight title
  • Goto vs. Taichi for the Openweight title
  • BC:OGs vs. Taguchi Japan for the Trios titles
  • Juice vs. Cody for the U.S Title
  • Bucks vs. G.O.D. for the Heavyweight tag titles
  • Tanahashi vs. Okada for the G1 Contract
  • Naito vs. Suzuki in a special singles match.

Also there's been a change to the Super Jr. Tag League tournament starting next month. It has changed from single elimination to a block format, round robin tournament, like the G1 we just had.

Speaking of the G1, might as well finally report on the final. it's been over a week, so no spoiler tag.

Your Winner Of G1 Climax 27:

Damn fine match between himself and Ibushi. I'd say it was even better than Omega/Ibushi. Ibushi still has a little further to climb before he can stand atop of the mountain with the Ace. Yeah, Tana has won the G1 twice before, but to be fair, his last win was three years ago. Just like his last IWGP Heavyweight title run. So him back in the title picture is kinda fresh. You know what else is fresh? The potential match up against Kenny Omega at WK13. Those two have ever fought only once. And come WK13, it would've been nearly three years between their only two matches. Plus it's a safe bet to have company man Tanahashi as champ in the event Kenny Omega doesn't resign. We don't need a repeat of the whole Nakamura fiasco.

My thoughts on the tournament as a whole? Great matches. But not as great as last year. Way too many DQ finishes marred the whole thing, which may have been intentional. Also all the best matches were limited to the B Block. A Block couldn't quite keep up, so seeing their matches was more obligation than exciting. The matches weren't bad. But B Block was just on another level.

So it should come as no surprise that my favorite matches are from that block. My top 5 G1 tournament matches are:

5. ZSJ/ Ibushi

4. Ibushi/ Naito

3. Omega/ Naito

2. Omega/ Ishii

1. Ibushi/ Ishii

All fantastic matches and I whole heartedly recommend them all. MOTY quality for each one.

With how personal and bloody things have gotten, it wouldn't surprise me. It'd be perfect for that stipulation.
