B84, Wilhelm's an expert in theoretical magic. While he can't perform it to be sure, he's studied it and has published several prominent papers (in fact creating a field which has been used to explain quite a bit of Equestria, based off of SS's writings on something he called a harmonic field when he was studying the EoH). Yes, he uses unicorn consultants for the actual practice stuff and to test things, but just as a theoretical physicist doesn't need a lab, Wilhelm doesn't need to personally perform magic.

Anyway, what if he's wrong? A theory can still be wrong. He can't test a theory himself like that and has to consult as you said. I honestly never understood why you didn't make him a Uni with a similar magical technology implementation to Lektra. I swear she's going to scoff and laugh at him not being a Uni while doing magical related stuff. She's heard of him being around, sure, but I'm going off of her never having seen him or read his papers. It's going to be a huge shock.

 

After this friction though when they've had a chance to talk geek and we've had fun writing that and hurting each other's heads on headcanons about a fictional world with fictional multicolored musical equines, I'm sure they'd be really good friends, especially once they figure out they're pretty much contemporaries.
