cider float 2,539 May 28, 2015 Author Share May 28, 2015 Your definition on what is a mary sue is extremely narrow visioned as you seem to interpret any character that is more powerful than other characters in their series to being mary sues when no it isn't. Being powerful and even over powered does not mean a character is a mary sue by any stretch as many characters with alot of powers can be great characters and not annoying mary sues while there are mary sues who don't have any powers but fall under such definition simply for how much impact they have on the story and how they're treated ideally despite going against the story's narrative in many circumstances simply to accommodate said mary sue. Bella from Twilight is a noted example of a mary sue who isn't a power house but yet exerted such great influence and control over many folks and individuals simply because they wish to protect this one supposed average teenager that one of their own kin decides to fall head over heels for. On my point for why Discord isn't a mary sue despite being powerful, I'll quote Coffee Pony's post that I've yet to see you counter to validate my belief on the matter. I've already said it's not his personality that I have a problem with it's the god-like cosmic power.
Nuke87654 1,849 May 28, 2015 Share May 28, 2015 I've already said it's not his personality that I have a problem with it's the god-like cosmic power. His powers aren't being intrusive on the show or even glorified to beget the notion his powers should cause that Discord be deserving of the mary sue label. In fact his powers are viewed as being a menace on the show as they worry that he'll turn Equestria into his personal playground. Despite being all powerful or so, his powers really don't have much of an impact on the show outside of his episodes.

Actually, it's not the power, but how the character uses it. And in Discord's case, his showman personality keeps him from being pragmatic enough to just snap all his problems away; instead, he favors complex tricks to screw around with said problems (which sometimes come back to bite him in the @$$ when he lowers his guard). Buck Testa 5,505 May 29, 2015 Share May 29, 2015 If he has good developed characterization, something you yourself say you like by the way, then he is NOT a Mary sue, which is specifically referring TO characterization. He is not a mary sue, neither is Twilight for that matter, or any character in the show. People who claim this have little to no concept of character development and story telling and are just using words they think sound nice to justify why they do not like a character. 3 http://www.fimfiction.net/user/Billy%20G%20Gruff http://billyggruff.deviantart.com/ https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPVpSXbUpDYTcaFHTPiPjYA
Dark Qiviut 22,585 May 29, 2015 Share May 29, 2015 (edited) I've already said it's not his personality that I have a problem with it's the god-like cosmic power. That doesn't make him a Gary Stu. What classifies as a Gary Stu/Mary Sue is a character who's liked by almost everyone in the canon and has no flaws that affect and groung his/her character. A perfect character physically and psychologically with only "flaws" as a lazy crutch. You don't need your character to be omnipotent to be one. Discord isn't a Gary Stu. He has the ability to change things quickly, but that's not something he likes. He also has big flaws: his enormous hubris (cost him his battle with Twilight); trust others a bit too easily/can get manipulated, too (Twilight's Kingdom), doesn't like to feel like an outcast (Make Friends); and emotions can affect what he loves like comedy (Make Friends). These are real flaws and really affect him. or any character in the show. People who claim this have little to no concept of character development and story telling and are just using words they think sound nice to justify why they do not like a character. No. One MS exists in the show: Flash Sentry. Fortunately, his character (or lack thereof) is confined to EQG at this point. Unfortunately, his presence there helps taint every scene he appears in both flicks. JonasDarkmane 19,790 May 29, 2015 Share May 29, 2015 Well, I don't consider Discord to be perfect, he is all time powerful yes, but even he has his flaws and can be unlikable by other characters, unlike many Mary Sues. Conred 274 May 30, 2015 Share May 30, 2015 Flash Sentry is the closest character that could be referred as "Mary Sue". Bland personality with nothing that would make him look heroic but still considered by the main heroine as "perfect" and "awesome" guy. Second place belong to Celestia. We are meant to think that she is powerfull, mystical and wise. However in reality, the show doesn't establish anything than her being useless or not present in almost any episode. If they at least meant to treat her as a joke then she woudn't be Mary Sue(or if they meant to give her flaws like they did with Luna in Luna Eclipse), but since we're suppose to take her authority as something serious for granted then they're developing her off screen as Mary Sue
