gaming Why All the Hate on Metroid Prime: Generation Force?

Interesting to hear this perspective. Your other post on the matter further sheds on this topic to where I now understand better on the anger the Metroid fanbase has for this game. I will apologize to calling the Metroid fanbase selfish for their anger, even if I do think it got excessive still, but now I can see the justification for the fandom's negative reaction to this game.

One of the founding hallmarks of the Internet is that people get mad over nothing, I'm just happy that my perspective could help you understand.

Honestly, I'm not even that mad that the game is being made. I've played every game in the genre my second post listed with the exception of SWAT, which was too difficult for my tastes. I love squad tactical games, but they're not metroid. Keep Samus and exploration in metroid games, and make a new property with tactical shooting, or better yet bring back Republic Commando!

First of all, it's Federation Force, not Generation Force.

As for why people are so mad, it's because people have waited five years for a proper Metroid game following Other M, and instead of getting another game like Metroid Prime or even the 2D originals, they get this co-op shooter/sports game that barely resembles a Metroid Prime game, let alone a Metroid game.

  • 1 year later...

Many people were expecting a full-fledged Metroid game rather than a handheld spin-off. Doesn't help that the last game was five years ago and was highly divisive(Other M). At that point, I can understand being disappointed...

That said, hating the game(before it's even out no less) to the point where people are openly attacking the devs and actively petitioning to cancel the game and demanding an apology from Nintendo? There's expressing disappointment, and there's acting like an entitled crybaby, and 90% of gamers are definitely acting like the latter

You have a point. I kinda liked Other M, but I understand why it was so divisive. Due to that mad taste it left, it's natural fans aren't too happy for this revelation, but they are going too far and self entitled. Because of this, I'm not trusting the negative reviews as they are likely done with negative emotions and thus: they only see the bad. Me? I FUCKING LOVE Metroid Prime, and I've also expected a traditional game of it, but it looks like fun, and it's also been years since I've last sowed death and terror on these damn pirates, and it seems to be plenty of them in this game

The prime series are considered some of the best Metroid games and the last game we got was Other M which was an insult. The first game we get in over 5 years not only is another insult of a game, it is an insult to the Prime series. While it has some neat gameplay mechanics, it ultimately is a bland shooter with little depth to it. It discludes Samus, the primary character of the series and we all know how Nintendo handles multiplayer heavy games: within a year they are virtually dead shy of Mario Kart and Splatoon.

From what I have heard, the game is actually pretty decent for a co-op shooter on the 3DS. The issue that is present is the use of the Metroid Prime name in a game that basically has nothing to do with that series. Apparently this game originally was not going to have that name at all, but then Nintendo stepped in and wanted it to be tied with Metroid despite it barely having anything to do with it.

That is a shame too because the game looks pretty cool for a handheld experience, but it is put on a massive pedestal that it must uphold with the Prime name and it cannot do that in the slightest. It is nothing like those games, if the videos I have seen are any indication.

Well, Metroid Prime: Federation Force is out now so I'm gonna give it a whirl and see how I feel about it.

Ultimately, Nintendo is falling back on "It was better than people expected" but it still sits at a 5/10-6.5/10 at best.

Gamespot gave it a 5/10, and users gave it a 4.6/10.

IGN gave it a 5.9/10, and fans gave it a 6.8/10

Metacritic gave it a more generous 6.5/10, but fans gave it a 4.9/10.

So across the board the game is mediocre at best, semi-bad at worst. So when Nintendo says "it's not as bad as expected", the truth is: not by much.

I've played it today, and I can say it's not half bad. The only bad thing is that the campaign seems kinda short, but at least getting the third medal seems demanding enough to try over and over and over again. Still, I hope to find some buddies to help me in co-op just for the fun factor
