This is the discussion thread for Disappearance, a new MLP text adventure developed by and written by myself.

What is Disappearance?

Disappearance is a text adventure, meaning it has zero graphics. Players enter commands into the game to interact with it and make choices. These choices determine if you keep playing, or if the game ends. So play well, and you win, like most games.

What's the story?

You play as Princess Twilight Sparkle, a purple mare from the city of Canterlot. One chilly winter's morning, Princess Celestia calls you to the castle, and she brings terrible news.
All over Equestria, Mares and Stallions are going missing, and it is up to you and you alone to save the day. You must travel the length and breadth of Equestria in order to search for clues as to who is the culprit and to save the poor missing ponies.

Is it ready to play?

Not ready as such, but you can still download pre-releases as the game is developed HERE.

Hey guys,
Developer of Disappearance here! :squee:

First of all, I want to thank you for being interested in our little project. :)

Please keep in mind this is an early demo of the first game I have ever created, so please don't kill me for bugs or bad code :adorkable:

Should you find any bugs, or think a specific command should be added to the game, please go to: https://github.com/CAPTNCAPS/PonyTextAdventure/issues and open a new issue.
It is easier to keep track of issues there than here ;)

Also, this is a very early release, and we have not much content, but basically all technology is in place (except a saving/loading system) that's why we release it. :muffins:

That the save/load system is not in place is because I have run into bigger problems with it, so please be patient, I am confident I will get it working, but I cannot tell you when it will be ready.

If you are interested in the game, check the Github page every now and then, Pre-Releases will randomly pop up :derp:

---
Pre-Release Demo was tested on Ubuntu 15.04 and Windows 10 Preview.
If you are on Windows, please read the readme included.
If you are on Linux, start the game either over the terminal or with one of the scripts (*.sh), do NOT double click the executable!

On the link choose the Zip file that ends in your operating system (x.x.x-demo-linux or x.x.x-demo-windows) and it will download the zip ;)
Just unpack and run.

I double clicked :( oh noes!

On Linux?

Better go to your system monitor and shut down the executable, it will start writing to your syslog!

Fills up your root drive rather fast.

I am looking into fixing this.

double clicking the scripts is fine, just don't double click the executable itself.

As long as a terminal pops up, it should be fine

*giggles* It'll be okay. :P Just shut down the executable in your system monitor. If you ran one of the scripts, it's okay, just try not to run the file called "ponytextadventure"  :)

How even?

I placed the executable itself in an extra folder...

just run the one of the scripts!

*uploads zip with hidden executable file*

Thanks, I think I got the hang of it now. The game isn't loading up though.

What system are you on and what exactly are you doing to start the game?

If you use the scripts, StartGnome.sh will try to start "gnome-terminal" and execute the game.

StartKDE.sh will try to start "konsole" and execute the game.

In any case you can go into your terminal and start it yourself

Example:

$ cd ~/Downloads/0.2.0-demo/.gamedata (or gamedata for you)
$ ./ponytextadventure

Okay I believe it was working but it then crashed for me.

What Linux Distribution are you using? The game has been tested on multiple versions of Linux, and it doesn't crash.

  • 4 weeks later...

I just wanted to say, I stopped development, and I have currently no plans to ever resume it.
