Should my oc stay a unicorn or become a pegasus

I went through a similar transition from pegasus to zebra. Tell me, is it JUST the wings you are after?

An earth pony could do the same with the mouth or hooves, and pegasi with those plus the wings. The ponies have all proven to be quite capable of manipulation beyond using magic.

My advice is not to focus too much on the 'special abilities' of your character. Sure, flight and magic are pretty awesome, but if the only reason you want to make your OC a pegasus or unicorn is so that they can have cool powers, you're not really going about it in the right way. I always think that personality should come first - you shouldn't let your character be defined by what they can do, because in the end that doesn't mean anything if they're not believable. The best OCs are those that may not have the coolest abilities, but are well thought-out, unique and developed.
 

I would actually suggest considering making your OC an earth pony, because it might push you out of your comfort zone a bit and allow you to really flesh out the important parts of them without being distracted by flight or magic. But it seems like you're quite keen on them being a unicorn or pegasus, so I'd say to just pick the one that fits your character the most. I don't know too much about them, so I can't really help you with that, but I think once you work out their talent it should be a bit easier to figure out. Just keep what I said in mind - don't let your character be defined by what they can do instead of who they are - and you should end up with a good character!

If you want to change your oc just for type reasons I would stick with the unicorn but if you want to make a peggy,  why not just give him a adopted little brother for that? Makes you branch out a bit and think on a new oc and story and really go through it will a fine toothed comb as to say.

Each race has its own kind of magic, Earth ponies included. Pinkie pie has her "Pinkie Sense," Applejack poured dirt in Twilight's castle and plants immediately grew from it, Tree Hugger can see auras. Although it is usually a bit obscure, Earth pony magic is a thing, while Pegasi control the weather, and Unicorns use spells. Figure out who your character is, then what he is.

Depends on whether you feel that a pegasus would suit your personality better. My original ponysona was a pegasus; I eventually gave her a total overhaul and made her a unicorn, cuz that suited me better.

 

As for the cutie mark, what do you think you are best at? You don't have to mush up all your talents into one cutie mark, just pick the one that you do the best and which you think represents you the best. For example, Rarity's talent is finding gems, so her cutie mark is diamonds. However, she's also talented at being a seamstress. Her cutie mark is simple; just three diamonds, not three diamonds layered over a sewing machine.

Hmm.. well this thread seems like the kind for advice on how to decide which to choose, rather than asking which one is best, that's a good thing, because it's ultimately you who decides what your OC will be

 

OC characters are best built from the personality upwards.. any powers or abilities you may have don't necessarily need to refect that..

 

My OC is a unicorn based off of me (as it IS me in the lore I'm still thinking about or writing..) and my personality.. I originally wanted to be a pegasus as flight would be awesome.. but it really doesn't suit me well.. My power however, is unique (as far as i'm aware), it's called "burst magic" my character learned this by mistake when trying to learn telekinesis.. it's not too useful by itself, but with in-depth thought (with my analytical personality) and focus, AURA has been able to use it for many purposes, even short-duration flight (with good timing and serious concentration) though he rarely does this tires him out very rapidly.. as well can be very difficult and is fairly risky..

 

Though it may seem "cool" to have powers you must always balance your OCs.. all characters, regardless of origin, race or destiny have their limits.. every power, ability or traits also have their own limitations as well as possible disadvantages..

 

No pegagus can fly all the time..

No unicorn can use magic all the time..

And No earth pony can be strong all the time..

 

 

 

But yeah.. my rambling aside, start with your OCs personality, then think carefully about what he/she can do.. all the while considering the balancing factors and limitations of your character and each part of it in depth :grin2:
