What kind of advice do you want?

About whether I should be open about it, as I am still a student, I am afraid that people would make fun of me

Ponies. All of them. All the time. Forever.

</advice of the day>

I haven ever been given advice as good as that

Do you feel like you need to be open about watching a cartoon?

The way I see it is, it's no real big deal. You like a show, and that's that really. If people judge you for it, then I wouldn't say they're genuinely good friends, or people for that matter. Just treat it as you would any other cartoon, since there's also no point in lying about it either. But I mean hey, this is just my opinion, take it with a grain of salt.

I always tell everyone the same thing: Don't make a big deal out of it and no one else will.

It's only one cartoon. You could just as easily get into any other fandom. At the same time even. It likely won't even take a large portion of your life.

Bronies are not only bronies. They are also gamers, musicians and grocery clerks. Even if your best friend isn't into MLP there's always something else to talk about with them. No need to obsess over it with people who have no interest in it.

Advice:

  1. Don't let a TV show change your life.
  2. Don't do the clop.
  3. If you must do the clop, keep it to yourself.
  4. Titles like brony are totally self appointed.
  5. Not everyone here is a brony.

All of that is very true, and while I know the title is self appointed I would definitely call myself a brony, and I know that not everyone on the website is a brony, I titled the discussion BRONY DISCUSSION, but thanks :)

Hi, I am new to being a brony, and would like advice as well as a discussion about the franchise (except for generation 3)

Hi, the topic title has been edited to better reflect the subject matter.

I am 15 years old, and I am quite open about being a Brony. Now, being open about it doesn't have to mean blowing things out of proportion. I live in North Dakota, and MLP isn't exactly a big thing here. But, I wear pony shirts, I make Brony jokes, I talk about the show (with the total of one other person that likes it). I don't get a whole lot of crap from people, and when I do, I can blow it off.

If it's important to you like it is to me, for whatever reason you have, I would definitely recommend being open about being a Brony. Some people may make it seem like doing so is just letting MLP dictate your life, but it's just being a Brony. There's nothing wrong with it, there's nothing to be ashamed of.

If you want to, go ahead. If you don't, then don't. Do what you want to do.

This is sort of what I mean by not making a big deal out of it. I'm not saying you shouldn't show your love but when people don't like to hear about it you don't need to be in their faces about it.

I don't hide it myself but neither do I flaunt it. I don't treat it like the taboo some people try to make it out to be and just tell people that I'm into it. Most people back off once they realize they can't use it as ammunition against me because I'm not even a little ashamed of it.

You'll see a lot of bronies hide it because they are uncomfortable about liking it or don't think those around them will react well. Except for a few special cases I would argue that most who do this are magnifying their fears far too much.

Everyone's situation will differ, of course, but it isn't the end of the world when you come to disagree with people about it. Nor does it have to be the end of a friendship or anything. I'd go so far as to say that even if you are judged harshly about it by your friends it doesn't mean they aren't good friends or that you have to burn those bridges. I don't agree with people who go along with the "if they judge you too harshly they aren't good friends" line of thinking. People disagree greatly about some things. Even the best of friends. It's not like it erases all the good times you had and all the things you do have in common.

That's different from a truly abusive relationship though and it's important to know the difference.

It's a little embarrassing at first, but if people ask you what shows you like and you reply "My Little Pony", you can briefly explain that it's a good show. MAYBE (emphasis on maybe) encourage them to give it a try.

I can't be too critical, as I haven't...*ahem*...come out of the stable yet, if you know what I mean.  However, if you feel that it's really important, the best way is to be nonchalant.  If something similar is brought up, you could just mention it in passing.  Something like:

Them: Man, I remember when my sister used to play with those My Little Pony horses.  You remember that?

You: heh, yeah.  Actually, did you hear that they've restarted the franchise?  I've watched an episode (haha, you lied, you've watched every episode), and it wasn't too bad.

Them: -sneer- you actually watched an episode?  You gay or something?

You: -chuckle- well, a friend recommended it, so I watched it.  You should try it out!

Other than that, I guess some advice would be to not let it control your life.  Don't be that guy who annoys the crap out of everybody else with it.  It gives the normal ones a bad rep

Good luck!

You don't need to be open about it. I'm not open about it because of what my family/friends might say, but it's totally fine to like MLP. Some may say that it's "just a TV show that shouldn't change your life", but for some people it actually has had an effect on their life. It depends on the person, but if it is important to you then let it be important.

If you want to tell others, you could start by mentioning it to your closest friends or family members who understand you well. There's no need to tell the world about it. But, y'know, it's up to you. Some are open, some just treat it casually, some are closed about it, and some think it to be the coolest thing ever. It depends on the situation and person, so I don't think there's no definite right answer. Just live as you wish :)

He's right ^ some of us are pretty much like undercover bronies...

My advice, lurk more.  I've been lurking for years now and it does great things for your sanity.

Well balls, guess I just stopped lurking with this post, huh?

My advice is to not make a big deal out of being a Brony either way. Don't make FiM the thing you talk about all the time to the point of annoying everyone else, but I also wouldn't recommend being paranoid about hiding your interest in the series to the point that you can't enjoy it comfortably out of fear of being discovered. If you're the type who likes to be open about what you enjoy, just casually bring it up and leave it at that. If other people inquire further then you can proceed to explain why you like FiM, but don't talk their ear off about it.

If you don't feel the need to bring up that you like the series, then don't. Don't feel paranoid about people finding out. Friends aren't going to up and abandon you if they find out about a particular hobby of yours if they truly are your friends, and family won't disown you so you have nothing to fear there. A little bit of playful mocking might ensue, but just cross that bridge when you get there. In the meantime there's really no need to call attention to it. If you want to stay in the closet for the time being then do so. Regardless of the approach you take, I wouldn't recommend making a big deal out of it. Do whatever feels more natural to you, so long as you avoid both extremes I outlined at the start of my post.
