You don't need to be a zebra to be spiritual, Tree Hugger or any of the hippie ponies in the comics are perfect examples of this. Zebras are defined in the show as being from africa, you could be a Zony which is what I actually thought your OC was at first,because then you could have some of the look of a zebra without having to be of african descent. 

 

Well we don't actually know where Zecora came from only from "far away." We can assume it's somewhat like Africa but thus far her homeland is unnamed and uncharacterized.

 

I don't like Zonies as a concept. Not that I'm against people having or making them, but I'm sticking to the canon races. Until we actually see a hybrid other than that mule reoccurring character, I'm sticking with it not being possible in canon.

 

Speaking of canon, Treehugger and others represent New Age spirituality rather than the older traditions and faiths which I practice in real life. Something that Zecora seems closer to in manner. Not that I claim to have her wisdom but I do strive to attain such a level.

 

 

You're overthinking my suggestion.   The pegasus and unicorn don't exist -- anywhere -- so it doesn't really make a difference where someone is from when using them. If you really had no concern with metaphor, then you didn't need to ask our advice on whether you could or should be a zebra in the first place, since the answer is "Go ahead! Be what you like!"

 

I did need advice, but others have provided me with answers I found satisfactory.

 

 

 

Spiting ancestry for the sake of itself is no better than ethnic stereotyping. It's up to you whether you want to be a zebra or anything else, but if you're selecting or avoiding a particular race solely for its ethnic implications, that's a poorly made choice.

 

Well I'm not. I'm choosing a zebra because Zecora has displayed aspects that I personally identify with and I don't see as represented by any of the pony races. I posited the real life connections for this particular thread to ascertain people's sensitivities, not as a part of what zebra are meant to stand in for in Equestria if anything.
