movies/tv Independence Day 2: Resurgence

Hey, how many of you kids remember Independence Day? I imagine not many considering half of you were probably not even born when the original came out. But go watch it anyway, it's a good movie.

Anyways, after 20 years, we're getting a sequel.

I was alive and well in 1996 -- but movies like this scared the crap out of the oversensitive 8 year-old version of me. I had to leave the theater when I was taken to see the movie for the first time.

Years later, though, I've come to appreciate ID4 as a dumb but entertaining sci-fi action movie. I'm partly surprised they decided to create a sequel given how self-contained the first film was. Welcome to Hollywood, I guess.

Or should I say, welcome to Earth.

I really, really, really want to like the idea for a sequel to Independence Day as it's such an iconic movie, but I can't even imagine wanting to see an independence day movie without Will Smith.  He was so incredibly the best thing about Independence Day.  Plus Independence Day never felt like a movie meant to have a sequel.  All they can possibly do is re-tell the exact same story... aliens come and kill people and they're technologically superior, but we kill them back anyway.

You know, I'm perfectly okay with this. That mothership looks massive and I can't wait to see how they take care of it. IF they take care of it.

Unlike Simon though I'm not so miffed with Will Smith possibly (definitely?) not being in this one. He was great in the first one but it's time to make way for a new one. Plus we still have one familiar face.

Oh my gosh Oh my gosh Oh my gosh, this has to be the best news I've had in months :pinkie::D:yay:

Independence day has to have been one of the best movies ever made and upto now I must have watched it 50+ times, and will still watch it when ever it is on, no matter what is on the other channels.

Star wars eat your heart out, this is class and I'm hoping worth the 20 year wait :grin2:

I'm not even going to try and speculate on the plot for this as it's a hard one to call. As Simon said

aliens come and kill people and they're technologically superior, but we kill them back anyway.

... but then this is the usual plot line to most sci-fi movies.

I get hyped for this movie as a sequel to 1996 film of Independence Day by Roland Emmerich, it'll eventually come out to theatres on June 24th, 2016. :grin2:

Something weird is going on in the sky that come from the outer space - an alien colossus, trying to attack our world. :o There's the way we can save the world by annihilating the alien ships with brave forces.

Princess Twilight Sparkle always do legendary stuff with magic in Equestria. Time to blast from the past.

I'm expecting nothing more than an enjoyable popcorn flick. Forget Michael Bay; Roland Emmerich is where it's at!

Regardless I will admit it will be weird not having Will Smith in this, but a movie is more than just the actors in it and it's been 20 years. I think a new cast for this movie is great. <3

I will get alot of heat for this. But i was never a fan of the original Independence day. For me, it was a bad version of war of the worlds, with Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum in it (which where the only good stuff in this movie.) And i never understood how this has become such an iconic movie.

Roland Emmerich is the german version of Michael Bay for me. Not as bad, but still just effects and no substance.

So no, i am not looking forward to the sequel.

So, last week I got to attend a special double feature showing both Independence Day films, even got a special lanyard for it.

Almost 20 years to the month, I got to see ID4 in theaters again. And boy was it worth it. Seeing on the big screen with massive surround sound speakers really brought out the best in the film. Definitely holds up after 20 years. Best movie going experience of the year so far.

The second movie? Not so much...

Double the budget of the last film and they couldn't afford practical effects, blowing it all on CGI instead? The destruction is no where near as on display in the last film. It has half the dog fights. Character development is rushed & forced. It gets even more cliched and cheesy than the fast film. I was not amused. This and Now you See Me 2 are probably the most disappointing sequels I've ever seen.

I am probably one of the few people that wasn't entirely fond of the original film and apparently, the sequel is horrible, so I doubt I will be seeing it any time soon. The first film has some charm to it for sure, but I could never get into it even after multiple viewings.

I just saw the movie last night.  I never saw the first one though.  It was a little confusing in some parts of the movie but I really enjoyed it.
