Just as a note, proper sword training starts long before you get to pick up a sword. In fact, most melee combat has more to do with balance and footwork than the type of weapon. Specific weapons come later in the training process.

 

That is, of course, if you're interested in having a 'realistic' basis for the RP. Which is kinda silly in general given the general premise of MLP RPs, but still it seemed relevant to mention it while you're planning the RP.

Sorry to butt in, but i need to say something as well.

 

In any sort of fighting type (Sword, martial arts, lances etc) You'll need to first before anything, strengthen the correct muscles, asuming you have average strength etc. Then as Fhaolan mention, you'll need to think about your footwork and balance. Not only that, but you'll also need to know how to swing the sword properly, along with learning how to block, counter and attack, and- Ops sorry i ranted for a bit.

 

But this is again your choice, if you want a RP with realistic martial arts then i will happily help you. I'm not as good on the swordplay department though.
