Need an oc

Veil

Recommended Posts

I've been a fan of the show for about 3 years now and I still don't have an oc yet. I want to make one but I don't even know where to start with, and the hardest part is going to be coming up with a name. Names are just hard for me, it takes me about an hour sometimes to think of character names in video games I play. Cutie mark is also gonna be a challenge as well.

Well I recommend deciding on what they look like first.

Pick your favorite species from the show, then some colors that you like and that look good together. Doesn't HAVE to be a pony either. As you can see, I'm an ahuizotl. Then you can think of details like hair and mane style, name, cutie mark, etc.

I normally start with either personality or appearance. For you'r first OC, you can base it off of yourself.

As for appearance, look at other OC's and get some ideas. Don't copy, but it is ok to pull inspiration. Go into a paint program and mass around with some color schemes and find one you like. Name and cutie mark can come later.

how I made my of was I took a character from an role play I was in, then did a do of his bio to fit in canon. Then had him drawn(oddly enough the art was done with wrong pallet, but it fitted better so now it is his mane colors) a name should pop into your head at some point.....or if it doesn't this name gen should put you on the right path http://nimbostratus.deviantart.com/art/MLP-Name-Generator-352292341

It gave me lightning gizmo, which later was shorten to just gizmo

I'll start by basing it around me and make a pegasus (they are my favorite after all). So I'll go play around with colors and see what I come up with. Any other advice would be most appreciated. Thank you.

all i can say is: dont force it

personally, if i try to force myself on creating something, i know it wont come out half as good as if it came naturally to me

also, you could try looking up canon characters and OCs to help you get some inspiration of your pone's characteristics such as colour scheme, mane style, etc

(e.g.: i got the idea for one of my OCs from the flutterbat episode and since it was near halloween, i wanted to to something spoopy)

and i cant really help you with names bc i'm not really good at it, but i'm sure you'll figure it out!

i hope i could help with something :D

and please show your OC once you create it!!

@,

For god's sake decide on their backstory before deciding on their looks.

No. That does NOT work for everyone.

Don't state it like it's a sacred rule of creating characters.

I have characters come to me in all kinds of ways.

Sometimes it's look first, sometime's it's story first, and sometimes the entire character just pops into my head at once.

Is there a reason why people are such elitists about making an oc or do I just misunderstand something?

It's a big deal to a lot of people. They are usually the ones that put a LOT of time and love in and they don't like people just slapping something down and saying, "Look I arted, now love it!!"

HOWEVER, the creative process is different for everyone.

And if you just want to create OCs as a casual hobby, then more power to you.

Ok, so I've got a back story that works, but like I said this is my first oc and its based on me, so I'm not even sure the backstory all that much maters.

I also made a ruff draft on Pony Creator. I feel its pretty good the way it is, but I feel it could use more work. I would post the image but I don't remember how to do that these days.

The last two things that are gonna be the hardest for me like I also said in my op is the cutie mark and the name.

Also I really appreciate the help from everyone, especially ShadOBabe and Game_KM. Feel free to pm on my oc if you would like.

I have a very good back story, (Actually used her in a story) name, and can picture her in my mind. I just can't draw to save my life. Oh well.

I can draw ok, the only problem is getting the art on the computer.

So all I need now is a name and cutie mark and the final drawing of my ponysona/oc. At least I think that should be it?

For the drawing, you can always use a base as long as you credit the person who made the base. That is what I do most of the time.

I actually found a way to upload a drawing on my pc and post it on the forums. All I need is the cutie mark and name I will post the final drawing in color. I made another topic on this cause this topic seemed like it was KOed.

@,

Well, you seem to have gotten an OC down. Based on the back story that you have, it should be...fairly easier to find a name and cutie mark that works.

What I tend to think of is their one special talent (with half of my OC's that doesn't work. As @@ShadOBabe stated, the OC can just randomly pop in my head sometimes as a whole) Before my current OC, I had one named Auto Tune. Now, I based her talent off my stronger talent in real life - singing. As for other OC's, they all resembled talents that I held as well.

So, when coming up with a name and/or cutie mark, it's easier to think of their talent first, then try and figure out the name and whatnot.

Thank you so much for the idea. I'll think about more tomorrow and try and get the final drawing out by the end of the night.

Night Visions makes a good pointt. Other than my main OC (who is based completely of myself), most of my OC's are based of one small talent or interest I have. I used to like rock climbing, so I have an OC who is a mountain climber. I am an alcoholic, so I have an OC who is good at brewing.

All of my OC names come directly from their talent. My musician OC is named Treble (like a treble cleff), my mountain climber OC is named Carabiner, and my OC who brews is named Thoroughbrew.

As for cutie mark, it doesn't need to be fancy. If you really can't think of something super original, then don't fret. Just as long as it isn't an exact copy of another one. It's more important that the cutie mark goes well with your OC than it being super original or fancy.

You're welcome. I try to help in any way that I can, and hopefully, what I said is of some use to you.

That's the glorious thing I like about my current OC. Due to her species, she doesn't have a cutie mark, so I never had to worry about that when coming up with a general design for her.

All right. It is done Veiled Storm is finally down. Here's the complete drawings I made of him. Like I said I try my best.

This one is a zoom of the cutie mark. Its a d 20 and was not easy to draw. Its also orange which is kinda hard to tell.

This is the colors since my drawing is hard too see (not the best camera).

If anyone could make the character model for him (sorry not sure what it would be called, basically make him look like he would in the show) that would be great. Also I can post the back story again. Otherwise I know there's a place to post your OC just don't know where it is (I'm still very new to the forums).
