(Possible S6 spoilers) Natural-born Alicorns make me uncomfortable

EDIT: I would like to add a preface stating that this is not as big of a deal for me as it may seem. I'm not a rabid SJW accusing the writers of being awful racists. This is just an observation of the possible implications this issue may bring.

I really, really dislike the idea of there being ponies who were born as Alicorns.

It's not really up for debate that this race, which combines the strengths of the three other types of ponies, is much more powerful than any other. Which is why, until recently, it was shown that such power had to be earned through great deeds.

With the revelation that Flurry Heart is a baby Alicorn, we now have a pony who is intrinsically better than others entirely because of the circumstances of her birth. This turns Alicorns into a "master race" of sorts, who are above others due to having the right genes.

I'm not just hating on Flurry Heart for being a new pony. Even before her, I disliked the idea that Celestia and Luna were born as Alicorns, and hoped that it wasn't true.

Of course, I'll have to see how Flurry Heart is handled in the show before I pass my final judgment, but for now I'm very wary as it can easily become a kinda racist message.

It's a show for kids and it's certainly not meant to be racist, but the unfortunate implications are still there regardless of authorial intent. Edited by Manman20x6

Pretty much my feelings exactly on the subject. Since Flurry Heart is cute and whatnot, I am willing to give it a chance, but it is one of those things that needs a good explanation. Hell, it could even be a mistake since all of the characters were shocked to see she was an Alicorn too. That or her wing size was weird to them all, but it seems them only showing the horn first with all of the characters smiling but then everyone acting surprised and concerned when the wings were revealed, something seems off. I am just not sure, but I do think that her being born as such goes against everything we have seen in the show so far. Even Cadence, the mother of this pony, had to earn that right, but her child doesn't? Seems iffy.

I think that it's wrong to imply that Alicorns are powerful from the get go, considering how the other alicorns have been portrayed.

Celestia, when she is on screen, gets her butt kicked. Twilight barely looks any stronger, then she did when she an Alicorn. Luna, shows that her powers have limits. Cadance really didn't show any sort of fight.

Also, does it really matter how powerful characters are, if this is supposed to be a slice of life show? This is My little Pony and not Dragon Ball Z

@@Manman20x6, I couldn't agree more.

But... People use the Journal of the Two Sisters to say that Celestia and Luna were born alicorns, but the book never actually says that. All it actually says is that alicorns age differently and and that they were educated by "alicorns". It's as headcanon as saying that Celestia is a troll or evil.

For dumb, self-important fics about mythology, ponies and fascist griffons that can't figure friendship out.

And I'm just getting started.

Since there are bad guys who are, well, powerful threats, their power does matter because if it didn't, then some random pony can just dispatch that villain.

As for being born alicorns, it depends on how (or if) the show will explain alicorns. Somehow, I think Faust would say that Celestia and Luna were born as alicorns, not whatever her word might be matters anyways.

It depends how much you actually care about those episodes. I just see those as good silly fun. I like the slice of life episodes better and consider them more important.

Honestly, I'm perfectly fine with the idea of natural born alicorns.

It kind of seems like being an alicorn might possibly even be more of a curse with a built in "Unworthy" switch, given luna; We saw an alicorn that gave into evil and stopped being pure turn into a monster, and Based on Sunset and Twilight in the EQG universe, who are basically alicorn humans there, it seems to be a recurring Trend with alicorns: Specifically, if an alicorn becomes evil, they "Fall" and physically change to show this like how luna became nightmare moon, twilight became Midnight sparkle, ect. So basically so long as an alicorn is "normal", you can be assured that they're pure enough to be worthy of who they are.

I always thought that Celestia and Luna were the only born-alicorns, since they're kinda not really like other ponies (since, for example, they've lived for thousands of years), so they're kinda an exception. Flurry Heart does seem to shake the commonly-held notion that all other alicorns have to attain alicornhood through some great magical deed, so yeah, I'm really hoping for a good explanation for her.

I definitely agree. Despite how cute I think she looks, it's impossible to overlook the fact that she is a natural born alicorn. What you said about the "alicorn master race" definitely applies here. She really has no reason to be an alicorn besides being born from one. (Which isn't a worthy enough reason)

Not only is she already more powerful than most of the population of Equestria right from the start, she is also the 5th alicorn in Equestria, which is a huge deal to me. The other 4 alicorns had clear reasons to be alicorns, even if how they became alicorns may be a bit scruffy. As we know, each is a princess of something, and that something they are a princess of is something that they are incredibly talented in. But what is Flurry Heart talented in? Who knows, she's a baby!

The point of genes should also be addressed. Of course, she must have gotten the right genes to be an alicorn. So if races are genes, (as they must be) and Flurry Heart turned out to be an alicorn, there is a pretty good chance the alicorn gene is dominant. If that is the case, some time in the future the entire population will all be alicorns. Imagine giving every one of those princess titles.

That's headcanon territory though, and I dare not trudge any further in there.

I'm sure we'll see something like this addressed in the show, but I'm still quite nervous. I can't think too critically though. This fandom has passed the whole Twilight with wings thing and the death of the library. Even with a giant sparkly toy castle, I'm sure the writers will make good use of Flurry Heart. Cadence was an abomination when she first showed up, and now she's a pretty alright character. (No more than alright though)

Presumably selling toys. Hasbro's banking on that gene being passed down from Cadance as well.

Humorously enough, I don't think cadence actually sells that well, or at least not as well as hasbro expected; After season 3 they backed off pushing her REAL quick as far as merch goes in favor of selling mane six toys more.

Anyways, for flurry's special talent...

She lives in a frozen tundra and her name, flurry,  is synonymous with gentle/small snowfall. She could be really talented at snow control/magic/weather control/ect.

Hey, your right! Guys, I take it back. Flurry Heart is actually the best thing that has ever happened to the show! We won't be needing that Fausticorn anymore.

This really made me laugh, thank you so much.

At the New York Toy Fair a battery-operated toy of Princess Flurry Heart was presented; the description said that she is able to perceive other ponies' emotions, and her horn glows different colors depending on them. So, she could likely have an ability in the show based on that.

I bet there won't be an explanation at all. It's just how it is.

I feel indifferent about it. Are alicorns the fourth pony race or just upgrades, which only unicorns can achieve? I don t know and the staff probably dont care.

I honestly think that we can't really complain. You say every alicorn earned it, but we never had any evidence or anything refering that you cannot be born an alicorn. Also, saying that it does not teach equality is really naive. Equality is NOT about physical features or physical advabtages. It is about giving everyone the same opportunities, as well as everyone has the same rights. I know the show is a bit different then equality in real life, but even the show itself supports my viewpoint. It teaches that everyone is special, and we don't force equality by taking those specialities away, but rather use them in a way everyone can benefit from.

Am I the only one who doesn't need an explanation for any of this because I genuinely do not care because the show is about cartoon horses and cartoon horse antics and so long as I get cartoon horse antics, I don't care. No one questions why Spongebob can have fire underwater and they even make jokes about it, but when it comes to MLP we all need an explanation of how a baby born could have both wings AND a horn like it's some illogical thing that we have real science behind debunking it.

Well, Alicorns were always potrayed to be naturally stronger than any other race, so I can't see why it would be racism.

It's possibly racist because one race is NATURALLY stronger than others.

If all Alicorns had to earn their transformation, it's not racist because their power is the reward for their hard work and great deeds.

With Flurry Heart, her power is just the result of her genes. She is better than everyone else simply due to being from the right bloodline.

You may have misunderstood my point. It's not about natural-born Alicorns being unrealistic, it's about the unfortunate implications of racism that they bring.

I guess I am not noticing because I am not looking for racism in a cartoon about horses. :I

What kinda racism? This show is called My little pony. Kids don't really look into these kind of things, because they don't understand the concept of races.
