gaming Youtube Gaming?

Flutter's lover <3

Recommended Posts

I was browsing Youtube just now and seen a little Controller Icon beside the usual "YouTube" logo, in the top left corner of YouTube. So I clicked it...dDoing so, brought up this...basically all my game Subs and suggestions...along with a Live feed of someone playing The Division.

Anything with a "check" on the video is from someone I'm subbed to. Unchecked are Recommendations I guess?

Anywho, what's the deal with YouTube gaming anyways? Anyone know much about it?

Looks like an entire thing dedicated to Let's Players, part of YouTube Red.

To which I say: Ugh. Let's Players are so friggin' overrated. Probably the most overrated thing on the internet.

I beg to differ:

Prank channels. Reaction channels.

Both of which end up with insane amounts of views and more than MOST Let's Players (shy of Pewd and the works). Hell The Fine Bros have more subs than Markiplier even. At least Let's Plays require some comedic talent. Reaction channels rely on you ripping off other people's actually funny content and filming reactions to it.

Couldn't agree more.

Both the react channels and the Prank channels have some of the scummiest people I've ever seen on youtube. Most of these prank channels aren't even pranking anymore, they are committing crimes and calling them "social experiments." Excuse me, they are paying actors to PRETEND to commit crimes and call them social experiments, and then up in coming prank channels see all that and think they need to do it for real and get their dumbasses arrested.

Reaction channels are going down though, several of the bigger channels have already quit like Jinx or moved on to something else.

Nah, they only seem overrated to you, because you probably used to watch and/or currently watch LP's. There are a lot of LPers, but there only a hand-full of good ones.

Like @Key_Sharkz said already, Prank and Reaction channels are overrated, because they don't ethically deserve the recognition.

I guess I am just not fond of the entire Let's Play idea. Sure, reaction videos are worse, but LP's, to me, aren't much better. To each their own though.

At least Let's Players try to get attention to the original product and try to advertise the game. Reaction channels often just rip off the original content and then bitch when people rip them off. Let's Players offer commentary that people enjoy and as I said, require a certain level of comedy to be entertaining. Many of them are good to their fans too. I think that is worth its weight, but reaction channels are often run by dickheads who don't care about their fans (and commonly will tell them to piss off if they don't like what they have to say), rip off content (such as when Tyrone Magnus completely ripped off GradeAUndderA and more or less stole his revenue), and many of them are just recording their reactions from a phone with no editing which takes virtually no work or investment.

Let's Players invest in equipment to record, buy the games that are supporting the developers (unless the developers give them to them, in which case clearly the developer feels that they are benefiting the product), edit their videos which takes time and shows legitimate effort on their part of wanting to be entertaining and a lot of the big name Let's Players use their channels to help good causes. PewDiePie donated half of his income 2 years ago to charity. That's over $2 million to charity. Hell, one of the most famous Let's Players: Cr1tikal donates ALL of his revenue to charity. Game Grumps donate to charity and make most of their income from selling merchandise, not ad revenue. JonTron makes a majority of his money through donations and ad revenue as well.

Prank and reaction channels are based upon exploiting people, companies and loopholes to get money that other people deserve. Let's Players are actually okay with helping support the games they play and want to help the people who make the games. They are not even close to the same league.

I get that a lot of people hate Let's Players because they think "it's too easy" and let's be honest: a lot comes from a place of jealousy. Yeah it blows thinking that someone is playing video games and getting paid a lot of money for it. But as the saying goes: don't hate the player, hate the game. A lot of these people took the chance, invested the time and money into getting a set up to make Let's Plays and it paid off for them. You can't say there was no risk involved because many of them had to invest in very expensive equipment and many hours (it takes a while to edit videos) to make their content.

Whenever I was subscribed to Markiplier years ago, I hardly ever remember him actually advtising a game. Most of the time, he would just goof off, scream like a moron and overreact to everything. The only games he ever really endorsed were stupid games and for stupid reasons. And actually, the exact same thing could be said about React videos. Those could easily be advertising something, because they are reacting to it, and sharing it. Really, LP's and React videos are very similar.

Pretty sure if I made MILLIONS of dollars doing nearly nothing, I would sure as hell be donating money too. You know why I don't donate money to charity? Because I don't have the money. These guys get more money than the developers themselves do, they are making more than doctors do. All for playing video games. Pretty sure donating to charity isn't very difficult for them.

3. Prank and reaction channels are based upon exploiting people, companies and loopholes to get money that other people deserve. Let's Players are actually okay with helping support the games they play and want to help the people who make the games. They are not even close to the same league.

And you are correct, I am jealous. These people not only get to have extreme lives of infinite luxury for near nothing, but they also get admiration and donations, fan art, fan music, all of this stuff and for what? Playing video games? Being obnoxious and loud while doing so? Gee, sounds lovely. Kinda makes my already destroyed confidence go into oblivion at this point.

With that, I am not continuing this conversation here. If you want continue it elsewhere, be my guest, I guess we can have a lot of fun going in circles.
