Status Update Character Limits: Expand or Make Clearer

Perhaps I am alone in this, but I have often experienced a particularly frustrating issue when it comes to status updates and responding to them. Specifically, there appears to be a character limit to each comment where it will happily slice off part of your comment and replace it with an ellipses. I imagine this was intended as a page break, except there is nothing to click on to show the full comment. It instead cuts things off without one being able to know how many characters they are limited to.

 

Therefore, I would like to suggestion one of two things:

 

1. An expansion to the number of characters allowed in a status update response, so that they can be longer.

 

2. A direct limitation, where the screen either shows how many characters you are limited to or outright prevents you from typing more into the reply box than what you are limited to in the first place. Of these two options I prefer this one because the number of characters allowed is probably enough as it is, but because there's no indication of what the character limit actually is, it's too easy to accidentally go over it and have your comment cut off as a result.

I support this! Even if we can't expand the character limit, I'd much rather be prevented from going over than having half my status sliced off

I'm gonna let my experience speak out here:

 

Once upon a time, on another forum site which runs the same exact forum software, character limits were imposed. Then the site was updated and the character limit disappeared.

 

I'm thinking this has to do with the forum software, but I have no knowledge about it. I mean, if it can be done (seeing the character limit or otherwise), that would be beneficial.

This has happened to me so many times. It's really annoying.

 

I agree more with the second option as I'm sure status updates are just meant to be a type of microblogging ala Twitter.
