Canonicity of books?

So sorry if this has been asked before but I am wondering are the books by GM berrow considered Canon? I know at one point in time the comics were considered Canon I am not sure about that anymore what is the consensus on that also?

I don't really know.  That one Pinkie Pie book had the names right for her sisters and it was released before the episode they were in. So I feel like Berrow probably has more knowledge or instruction from the writing crew.  Speculation, I know, but really the books seem like canon.

 

We'll see...the upcoming episode would be a great opportunity to confirm Cadance's backstory that was addressed in one of Berrow's books.

Secondary canon just like the Comics, EQG, etc., despite GM Berrow becoming one of the show's writers. They won't become canon unless the show properly addresses them, and there's also a chance that the show can overwrite the books(like I don't consider Twilight's book ever becoming canon despite interesting tidbits about Cadance mainly because of how it portrays Trixie sadly enough)

I don't know about officially canon, however my view is that considering it is still official material it is canon until proven otherwise or conflicts with what may be in the show.

The fact that we have these books, comics, and the EQG series being in questionable canonicity, makes the whole canon of the show and any of it's materials be a lot more confusing than it really should be.

Hi, as this thread is about the books, it has been moved to the appropriate board.

 

Also, spinoff media such as the books are considered B canon. What that means is that it's all technically canon, but if anything contradicts the show canon, weight is given to the show as that's the A canon. Moreover, all spinoff media is optional, meaning it has yet to be mandatory in order to get the most out of an episode. The advantage of B canon material is that it makes a given canon as simple or complex as you want it to be. If you enjoy complex canons, then B canon material should be right up your alley, but if you want a simple, easy to follow canon, you can just follow the show and not bother with other material. You can also pick and choose which you want to follow should you decide to follow some B canon series but not others. So yes, it's all canon, but it doesn't have to be part of the canon you follow, if that makes sense.

As many wrote, secondary canon. It can be considered canon, unless the show outright contradicts said material, which the only mayor one in those books so far is in Twi's, with Trix still douchy, and Gilda still in Poniville. Otherwise they fit perfectly most of the time, with small mistakes here and there of course  -_-

That's an official statement. All of the spinoff media is licensed by Hasbro, so it's all canon. It just takes a backseat to the show, which for understandable reasons relies solely on its own canon.
