I'm surprised there isn't a topic on this yet. Princess Bride (1985) is a much beloved movie that started as an outstanding book (1973) written by William Goldman. I've read the book, but I was introduced to the movie first, so it's made a bigger impression on me.

The story centers around a young maiden by the name of Buttercup who falls in love with a farmworker by the name of Westley. The feeling is mutual, but Westley wants to be able to support Buttercup before he can marry her, so he goes to sea to find his fortune. His ship is taken over by the Dread Pirate Roberts, who never takes any prisoners, and he is killed.

Five years later, the Prince of the land, Prince Humperdink proposes to Buttercup. Or rather, decides to take her as his wife, since she has no choice in the matter, and makes it very clear that she isn't interested. As she is going for a ride in the forest one day, Buttercup is abducted by a 'genius' (very loose term) Vizzini, fencer Inigo, and strongman Fezzik. Vizzini captures Princess Buttercup looking to start a war with a neighboring country. While in the kidnapping boat (that's a thing, right?) the four are followed by a mysterious other non-kidnappy boat. Who is this non-kidnappy boat? Is he going to try to take the princess and ransom her? Save her? Cause more chaos? What's going to happen to her?!

Anyways, there's obviously a lot more to the story, but going any more in-depth will cause the dreaded spoilers. The movie is amazing, with some of the best insults, quips, characters, and laughs in any movie ever. If you haven't seen it, it's on Netflix in America. If you have seen it, go watch it again.

Cary Elwes is still hot. I have a thing for old guys. (even though he's not that old)

AS YOU WISH!

I loved that movie. Such a great romp through a very well imagined world. I may pick up the book now as I have never read it.

No Princess Bride thread? Inconceivable!

I do not think that word means what your think it means...

I wasn't exactly a big fan of it when my grade 6 English teacher announced to us what he was reading to us. I very quickly got into it though, it's such a fantastic story. We also watched the movie, which is a bit more easy to recollect as I rewatched it last year. I loved the swordplay especially and the action scenes, though I didn't mind the mushy parts too much...  :P
