gaming Nintendo software only.

You forget that Nintendo still has a huge edge in the portable systems market. Their 3DS line has little competition from Sony (who don't seem at all interested in the Vita) and Microsoft haven't even bothered. I suppose you could count smartphones and tablets in that area, but they aren't really 'games consoles' per-say.

So no, I don't quite see them going software only just yet. Nintendo have been around for a long time in this business, they have survived through numerous generations where others fell. I wouldn't say they're quite ready to bow out after a couple of poor years.

It depends, Nintendo has repeatedly say if their console business fails they'd rather go under than go 3rd party. Whether that'll actually happen if the time comes remains to be seen

They could always go purely handheld too, considering their handheld division isn't doing that bad all things considered(the fact that the 3DS still sells in the wake of the dominance of the iPhone/cellphone market is pretty impressive)

While I hope that the NX is a quality and successful (in that order) home console, it wouldn't be the end of the world if Nintendo did go straight-up portable.  I've repeatedly heard that Japanese gamers tend to favor portable systems, and I think people have a more positive outlook towards Nintendo's portables than home consoles (particularly as of late).  If Nintendo abandoned home consoles and devoted more attention and money to their portables, I believe they could come up with something quite impressive.

No, even if Nintendo decided to get out of the home console business like Sega did years ago it will still remain in the portable console business because they are doing quite well there with their only major competition being mobile games though Nintendo is starting to make moves to break into that as well which is smart of them.
