College Life

So, as a senior about to graduate from high school and into college, I've always wondered what it would be like for my first year of college. I've heard a bunch of people tell me their stories about their first years on campus, so tell me: what's your story like? What can a soon-to-be freshman in college expect on his first days on campus?

Im not gonna lie, it was crazy. Don't get me wrong, a good kind of crazy but crazy nevertheless.

They start off easy, but they'll throw you into hot water as soon as you let your guard down. The amount of research i had to do in order to supplement what i learned in class was staggering at first but i got used to it.

Don't get cocky though, because it doesn't get any easier... just more familiar. After my first year i was euphoric, thought i could take on anything. Suffice is to say that it was far from true lol.

Anyway, don't feel too bad about challenges, and prepare to be overwhelmed once in a while, it's entirely natural.

Having just finished my first year in college, I can say from personal experience that college isn't all that different in terms of work load vs high school. However in college it is really your responsibility to get your work done. As for getting involved in campus life at your university of choice there should be a place that people post flyers for events and clubs that students can attend.

More importantly go into it with an open mind and a willingness to try new things.

It was horrible but after getting used to it you realize it's really just the same as in high school. Only you're a little more busy I've personally not partaken in any social events as in clubs or parties. Personally I think college or university is not for everyone, unless you're willing to devote yourself to it, it will become just that much harder. So keeping in mind you're devoted it should be fine. My reason for why it was the way it was is because I did not go with the right mindset and studied something I had no interest in so after changing that my perception changed a lot. I should note that I've rarely taken part in the social side of school, so I can't really comment on that.

One advice I would give is to just believe in yourself.

My first day freshman year was pretty funny actually. My grandparents and dad helped me move into my room. I was in a quad, so I was moving in with three other girls. Luckily, two girls had to move in early for soccer season so there were only two of us moving in that day instead of all four. I was eager to unpack so I pretty much rushed my family out the door as soon as I could. I unpacked everything and started getting to know my roommates when someone knocked on the door. I answered and a girl named Autumn that I had met on Tumblr over the summer was there. She asked if I was Sabrina and introduced herself and it turned out that she was in the room directly next door to me! It was the weirdest coincidence ever. She's pretty much my best friend now and freshman year involved her and two of my three roommates and I getting into all sorts of shenanigans.

I do have to say though, your experience is definitely going to be shaped by factors like your major, what clubs or sports you participate in, and what people you surround yourself with. Being an art major, I had a lot of out there friends, but it made my whole college experience really memorable.

From what I have heard from people it is just like high school but with more alcohol and work. The perfect mix of adult life and high school.

It depends on if you start out at a community college or just go straight to university, you would be surprised how much similarity there is between community college and high school. Granted there is some differences as well, like you are much more responsible for your own affairs and there is much more flexibility in terms of when you can have classes and in many cases more variety but many of the basic core requirements are maybe slightly more difficult than their high school equivalents. If I can give any advice though start out slow so you get used to it but try to have a good balance of easier and more difficult classes, I took way too many easy classes at once and got stuck with the more difficult ones.

My advice: don't take out loans. Don't listen to what they say about how most people pay them back, do not take out loans. You will regret it.

Unless you're at a prestigious school, chances are the majority of other students are just there to party. People are going to be loud all night, people are constantly going to smoke weed in the dorms and set off fire alarms when you're in the shower or in the middle of a nice dream (it's even worse when the numbskull engineer who designed your dorm connected all the vents so that you get to smell that wretched stench 24/7), and hardly anyone is going to give a shit about actually putting effort into anything. My advice is to live off of campus, maybe rent an apartment or house with a few friends or like-minded people, and be responsible with your time. Partying is fine, just leave enough room for other stuff, too. You're not spending thousands of dollars just to get wasted every other night. If you wanted to do that, you'd go to Vegas or something.
