NavelColt 22,880 May 5, 2012 Share May 5, 2012 (edited) So close to falling asleep, but then this question popped into my head, and I had to come make a topic for it before I vanish off for the night~ Why does Discord get turned to stone when hit by the Elements of Harmony? Clearly the answer can't be 'It's a specific spell', since the Mane 6 did the same exact Rainbow Beam Cannon of Doom on Discord as they used on Nightmare Moon, and both got different results with each. My theory is that the Elements of Harmony represent pure, undiluted, concentrated harmony, while Discord represents pure, undiluted, concentrated chaos. Complete opposite ends of the spectrum of stance. So, when Discord is hit by the Elements of Harmony, his body is petrified to stone from the powerful harmony canceling out it's pure opposite, chaos. Make two complete opposites come in contact with one another, and you get a severe reaction: This a concept you find in everything from Chemistry to our universe itself. Simply put, Discord is petrified into stone because he represents pure chaos, so when he is hit by pure harmony, aka the elements, his magic is cancelled out by theirs, and he is petrified. Other villains like Nightmare Moon may be 'evil', but they did not represent chaos, harmony's complete opposite. I also want to make the differentiation between chaos and evil. Chaos in of itself just means out of order, lack of order and lack of harmony. It doesn't imply in of itself any evilness, even when evil accompanies it often. It's for that reason that say, even someone as cold-hearted as Queen Chrysalis would not be turned to stone when hit by the elements, because she may be pure evil, but she is not pure chaos, harmony's opposite. /rant Now before I turn the topic over to you ponies, here's an on-topic gag of mine, once again~ Edited August 27, 2012 by ~Chaotic Discord~ 14 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

You know, without any counterweight and stuff on the other side of the scale. Tiina Brown 67 May 5, 2012 Share May 5, 2012 My idea is similar to shefira, but clearly not the same: The Elements of harmony is probably incapable of killing, because that would break the harmony itself (ok, it would perhaps be able to kill in the few cases where killing really would be the best ... ) However, as distorted and tyrrannical as Discord may had been, the most harmonical judgement would be to imprison him, not to kill him. In the case of Nightmare Moon, the most harmonical judgement would be to temporarily remove the powers, and thereby also fully remove whatever it was that caused luna to become nightmare moon in the first place. I think ... that the changelings would be turned into ponies, in a way, perhaps even removing their "love vampirism", but giving them cutiemarks, individual, and so on .... It's along the lines of asking, "Without the darkness, how would we see the light?". In a way, Discord is comparable to Satan; he feeds off other people's temptations and subconsciously tells other people to carry out evil deeds. In a stone casing of course, it's much harder to do, but the idea of disharmony is still there and as a result, nothing is really truly good. hironakamura 126 May 6, 2012 Share May 6, 2012 (edited) I had a question about why Celestia didn't revert Nightmare Moon back to Luna the first time she used the EoH on her and banished her instead. They had to wait a thousand years for the new EoH users to revert her. It might be the same with Discord. My theory is they don't really know how to use those things and it just makes it do random things. I doubt the EoH can be used to kill or destroy anything, though. You either get banished or stoned.
