vanillapudding 44 August 29, 2016 Share August 29, 2016 Ok, so I know Dr. Hooves has his reasons for his cutie mark - but what about all the rest of them? It's the most common cutie mark that comes up, and even if it shows up less and less in later seasons the fact still remains that there's more ponies with that cutie mark than there were in Starlight Glimmer's equal sign village - and according to canon lore, those cutie marks happened naturally. I tried searching to see if this was talked about in the past, but I really only got glimpses of partial conversations (like a thread talking about why Minuette has an hourglass cutie mark back in 2013 - but that wasn't the focus as much as 'are cutie marks really a pony's destiny or can it differ'). Considering that most ponies get very unique cutie marks, I wonder what kind of implications they have in the world - and how it might've gone down if any of the CMC had gotten that one. One example I can think of: "Oh look! Applebloom finally got her cutie mark - and it's an hour glass! How typical! Such a common pony doesn't get to have a real cutie mark like me." Y'know, if they hadn't gone with the redemption story for Diamond Tiara.
Gestum 2,493 August 29, 2016 Share August 29, 2016 There's no meaning to it. The animators simply reuses a few cutiemarks to save time.

Justin_Case001 4,934 August 29, 2016 Share August 29, 2016 That's an interesting point. I never thought about how lots of ponies have that mark. Could it actually be a reference to the animators not having time to do that many individual marks? Like, one night, one of the animators was rubbing her eyes and said, "Ugh, I don't have time for this..." then stopped and looked up, and went "Hey...TIME! That'll work!"
RealityPublishing 323 August 29, 2016 Share August 29, 2016 The secret is that all those ponies are actually time-travelers from alternate timelines. Y'see, when you go into another dimension, you're forced to change your cutie mark into an hourglass to signify that "you've seen the other side".

Concerned Bystander 2,905 August 29, 2016 Share August 29, 2016 It could mean all sorts of things. In one pony it might represent that they are obsessed with punctuality, another maybe makes timepieces. It would translate to basically any characteristic or profession in which time is a big factor. Like, one night, one of the animators was rubbing her eyes and said, "Ugh, I don't have time for this..." then stopped and looked up, and went "Hey...TIME! That'll work!" the birth of "Dr. whooves" explained, and the timelord ponies are confirmed cannon.... even if they just playing around with easter eggs. The secret is that all those ponies are actually time-travelers from alternate timelines. Y'see, when you go into another dimension, you're forced to change your cutie mark into an hourglass to signify that "you've seen the other side". and all of the good students of the dr. now travel through time, marked by time... but just like the other Doctors, they go un-noticed (by the ponies) unless they want to be seen (like by the fandom!)... we are watching the history of the pony Dr. and the "others" are becoming more prevalent to show how we are nearing the "end of time".... its just my crazy theory.... 1 OC: https://mlpforums.com/page/roleplay-characters/_/choros-isorropai-r9669 Blog: https://mlpforums.com/blog/3158-poetry-simply-that/ The unasked questions are what bother me, not the answers. The answers give me clarity. Silence is in its self an answer, so ask! To not ask is to deny the existence of said question, and leaves you with just "what if". vanillapudding 44 August 29, 2016 Author Share August 29, 2016 BUT HEY, THAT'S JUST A THEORY A PONE THEORY THANKS FOR POSTING - But yeah, I know it's animator's saving time, so I guess I am looking for more headcanon theories. But more than that - the social implication of that cutie mark. Since it's so common, is it still special? (Though if other ponies aren't seeing the hourglass that means they still look special.)
