Adventure or Slice of Life episodes?

Adventure episodes are all well and good, but i prefer slice of life episodes. To me, episodes like that are where the show and its message really shine.

I usually prefer the slice of life episodes, the characters are the most interesting part of this show to me, and those are the episodes where they commonly get to shine the brightest.

 

 Adventure episodes can be great fun too though, and spice the show up with some variety, so I'm glad we still have some of those.

I like both. I think a good even mix suits the show. I love adventure and some action with my favorite ponies... but nothing beats unwinding to some simple stories dealing with their every day lives and problems.

I like adventure; I'm a huge adventure fan, and I really love the more magical girl aspects of the show (expected ALOT more of it when I first saw Season 1). That being said, At this point I've pretty much given up hope on getting good adventure episodes, as the series has pretty much gone downhill on that, as the ONLY times we've gotten good Mane six adventure episodes have been few and far between (Like Power ponies or do princesses dream of magical sheep or Return of harmony), so I can't champion adventure too much more.

In order to make the series more about adventure, you'd pretty much need to do a major revamp or start over with an alternate continuity, as this show is very much 100% set up, at this point, to be SOL as 90% of its focus, and the mythos overall means that most Adventure episodes will have a hard time working well (Power level wise, you have some of the mane cast who are basically useless in a fight compared to the others-- For example, a threat that can't be handled by Celestia isn't really something that pinkie or Rarity would be able to help at either without the EOH). As an example, they made EQG more magical girl heavy and to do that they massively buffed Rarity and Pinkie out the wazoo compared to their normal selves. And that would run the risk of making the show jump the shark to do that in FIM.

 

 

So, I LIKE Adventure, but I can't really DEMAND more adventure for FIM because I know its a delicate balancing act and difficult to do as things stand.

I prefer slice-of-life and tend to find adventure-type episodes overall less impressive, perhaps because I don't feel like the show has a particularly wide variety of them. Both are better when they tell a story which is at least somewhat personal to a main character, although I tend to feel that the adventure episodes are a tiny bit more beholden to formula than slice-of-life episodes, and just have fewer stories which could possibly be told with this style, this tone, and these characters. For this show in particular, I think that slice-of-life episodes just work a lot better, and have an easier time facilitating character development.

There needs to be a balance between the two, i like to think.

The way the show is structured - having each season's beginning and end being about adventure and the rest being slice of life - is what i believe to work best.

Althought i'd like to have the two or so middle episodes of each season beig more adventure focused: one to end the first half of the season and one to start the other.
