What does it take for a merch to become a collector's item? And what pieces of pony merch have reached the status of a collector's item and for what reason?

The SDCC merchandise are a good example of collectors items within the fandom. Some command high prices still even to this day. Other pieces of merch may hold value due to rarity(not the pony:please:) or demand. While it varies from item to item, I've been monitoring the prices of some exclusive and non-exclusive merch and some are worth more than another. The Funko collectables being a prime example, stop production awhile ago and so the prices and demand may go up. Custom design merchandise made from the fans are also highly regarded and quite possibly the highest form of collectables due to being almost one-of-a-kind.

Hasbro has also caught on and release some better merchandise for the sake of collectors. Like @CT-1138 said, the GOH line appeals to everyone and as such, release some merchandise that reflects a higher quality. The Movie merchandise are also catching on with a sticker that signifies "official merchandise" probably due to the nature and regard towards the occasion.
