Backstory broken horn

My OC has a broken horn, but I need a story for why it is broken.

His name is Orchestral Bells and he is 26 year old. He composes music for orchestras and he plays percussion, cello, trombone and bass. He is serious, laughable and disciplined.

I'm sorry - I'm not completely familiar with pony lore - is there anything significant about a broken horn? What happens as a result? Is it predictable?

In the upcoming movie there's a unicorn with a broken horn. Since she also lost his magic, I would say it's a very serious thing for ponies to lose their horn.

They lose their magic in the proses.

They lose their magic? That's harsh man. I'd image a unicorn without magic becomes a sad being.

So tragic.

The question of why it was broken is definitely important because it will determine his underlying personality. Was it accidental or deliberate? Long ago or just recently?

Perhaps try to find out what kind of behavior you are looking for - is he looking for vengeance? for restoration? doesn't care and lives with it?

I'm liking it more if it was an accident and it was when he was 18. He now is 26. He has no hard feelings for the person who did it. He became more serious and had a depression. 

I have been thinking about that another unicorn set a spell which went wrong and he lost his horn in the process.

That is a good start!

A spell gone wrong is believable. Was there a lesson learned from this event? That is, anything that may define him in some way - ie, he hates magic now and doesn't trust it, seeks magic powerful enough to reverse his loss, is afraid of magic, etc.

Or maybe he lost his horn as a young filly like when he was a 3 year old when a major villain was attacking equestria. Like maybe his town was attacked by the Changling army and they attempted to take his love but he lost his horn when he defended himself from the changelings.

To be honest this scenario is modular with his age like the changing incident probably happened to him when he was 18 or close to it! Plus it can also add an element of craving revenge to his personality as he might want to someday get revenge against Queen Crysilas.

I think I've got it.

He was a very talented unicorn. Almost as good as Starlight and Twilight. But when he tried to do a complex spell when he was 19 years old he made a fault, which caused an explosion. He was heavily wounded. The top his horn was gone, so he couldn't use magic anymore. He became depressed for a couple years, till Celestia found him again and encouraged him to do music, since he was always fascinated by it. This helped him overcome is lose, but he never became his past self. He is serious, but back in the days he was always in for a laugh.
