Is Starlight Replacing Twilight?

Guest

One fear I have is that with Twilight settling into her role as princess of friendship and Starlight sharing so many qualities with the Twilight before she became a princess, Starlight will become, (if she hasn't already- some people will say she has,) more of the focal character of the show over Twi.

It might just be me worrying about the future of my favorite character, but I can't help but notice Twilight hasn't been much of a plot point in a while. She's very much become a FiM princess in that she is there to be a benevolent force more than an intricate character. It seems like being a princess and being Twilight dovetail somewhat poorly so her characterization has been spread out a bit more, and Starlight gets to fill Twilight's old role of teaching the viewer about friendship through learning.

There are very clear differences between the two's characters, and it could very well be as simple as Twilight having to take a backseat to Starlight as she spreads her wings as a character before she takes on a unique role of her own, but sometimes I wonder and worry.

What are your thoughts?

Even though I like Starlight Glimmer more now than I did after her first few appearances,

I hope she doesn't become featured *so* much that Twilight Sparkle is completly forgotten despite being the "main"

protagonist this show was originally centered around.

Considering Starlight has been interacting more with side characters than the main cast shows exactly what would happen if you try to replace Twilight with Starlight. You would lose the entire base most of the Mane 6 have with each other. It would be like replace Twilight with Big Mac or Discord, they have a strong enough dynamic on their own but throwing them into a group as the driving force would not work for their group dynamic. I think "Every Little Thing She Does" demonstrates this well. Starlight is fine for supporting the main cast just like any other pony in Equestria but they're not that close.

Well, okay, I don't like Starlight, but I actually don't think this is the case. While Starlight had the most focus episodes in season 7, she's not present in every episode like Twilight was back in season 1, so I think the show's still pretty comfortable having more than one main character - I honestly feel Twilight stopped being the show's focal point starting in season 2. In season 7 she seemed to appear more often than basically anyone else, but since she wasn't in every episode, and lacks a strong connection to most of the other main characters, I wouldn't yet say the show has shifted entirely to her.

Moreover, I actually felt that season 7 did a good job of making Twilight feel human again after she became increasingly dull through seasons 4-6. Season 7 had "A Flurry of Emotions" and "Once Upon a Zeppelin," which both allowed her to be flawed and complex while still being sympathetic, as well as "A Royal Problem," which had her in an advisory role but didn't make her perfect or boring. And none of those episodes ignore her princess status! Season 7 succeeds because it considers what the title of "Princess" actually means to her.

What are you even saying here? Where did I say they didn't, especially in that quote? Are you confused or something?

Blasphemy is responding to the idea that you can like Starlight and Twilight, sarcasm

2nd line is directed at the OP, not at you

Even though I'm expecting Pinkie, Fluttershy, and Starlight to get the most potentials next season, my answer is still NO. If Starlight completely replaced Twilight, like in this totally unreliable video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mZFZGOupdPA

That would be a downright terrible thing. Besides, the magazines aren't featuring her much anyways.

Aww, you took Spike out. And I think he needs the development the most! :(

Unlike Sunset Shimmer, Starlight wont and wont be able to replace Twilight because:

1. She didnt have any real chemistry with the mane 5.

2. She loves supporting characters.

3. Fans wont like it, even Starlight fan dont like it at all.

I have a question to myself, if Sunset is the actual one who come to replace Twilight (like she did in EQG), i dont know what people will think about it, my bet is, Sunset wont replace Twilight but SHE CAN.

Starlight's job is to fill the narrative niche Twilight's character development moved her out of.  Particularly, the one who can do unethical/unwise things with magic without needing an idiot ball.

Well, yes and no. She's not replacing Twilight, but she's taking the part of being Twilight's season 1-3 self! Twilight developed to be something bigger, and Starlight just took the place of a second unicorn in the cast!

Starlight is going to replace twilight on the last episode when sunset shimmer comes back and Trixie, Bulk Biceps, Dr. Whooves, and Inky Rose must set off on the final call of the cutie map to go solve a problem in a new land which leads to G5 My little pony.

IT works really well! Know why?

1. Starlight Glimmer - Hyper intelligent, Super good at magic, and in many ways a total spastic nerd who makes rash decisions = Twilight
2. Sunset Shimmer - She has a real small home town, home coming honest sweet heart with a stubborn attitude, is smart, but her intellect is not her best attribute = Applejack
3. Trixie - Boastful, center of attention, funny idiot = Rainbow Dash or pinkie pie
4. Bulk Biceps - He doesn't really fit in as well, but is basically a gentle giant. Plus would add good dynamic for diversity. More or less his gentle nature makes him = Fluttershy
5. Dr. Whooves - Not so much the pinkie pie of the group, but if they played his "he's the doctor" card just right during the right times, plus the fact that he's a boy, would add some good elements to the group as a whole. He could possibly be the more "flawless" one of the group, the level headed inventor / mechanical genius. Maybe play up the "I have an invention for that" trouppe to get the group out of an impossibly tough jam.

6. Inky Rose - She was never a major character, and we will probably never see her again, but a gothic Rarity with the personality of Maud Pie would certainly be interesting. It would play up the girly dress maker, and we would have our feminine character, but it would present young girls with a different kind of girly feminine. Not the frilly poofy pink lace and gowns kind of girly you see in the pink toy isle, but something new and unique that would show that just because your not the same vanilla brand of bright poofy pink dress wearing tea partier, doesn't mean your not "girly" as well, and that there are different kinds of feminine, much in the same way that inkey Rose's Gothic, black attire still makes her the same as rarity.

Something weird is that I think Starlight and Lyra would get along. We barely know a lot about Lyra but we know just enough for it to be possible for them to be PFFs.
