I believe Celestia had a princesshood path for Sunset, but not exactly based on friendship.

And that once she went through Sunset's corruption, she drove her next student (Twi) to the friendship path that ultimately led to her princesshood.

Seriously? The "Destiny" bull$hit card? Sunset has a cutie mark that is similar to Celestia's & she could have just as easily become the Princess of Friendship if Celestia thought to steer her to the path of friendship in the first place. HELL! If Starlight Glimmer had been smart enough to do so, she would have went back in time to when Twilight Sparkle was conceived in Twilight Velvet's womb or when Twilight Sparkle had been born & just KILL HER!!! Then again, considering that the show wasn't aimed at a mature audience, Hasbro & DHX would've been unable to make that happen without it getting too graphic for the show's intended audience. In fact, try to imagine Hasbro & DHX trying to get away with that without traumatizing children. It just won't happen & that would only be possible in a fanfiction if someone was crazy enough to write that.

I'm not sure if Sunset would have become the Princess of Friendship. I mean, she would have become a princess had she not chosen to betray Celestia but friendship was something she--Sunset--didn't see as a priority for her. Instead, she focused heavily on her studies in order to prove her prowess. If anything, Sunset could've become Princess of Magic or perhaps Princess of Humility since Celestia tried in vain to make her see that she needed to show humility.

Then again, if Starlight Glimmer went back in time to kill Twilight Sparkle around the time that said pony was born, Harmony would probably find a replacement for Twilight Sparkle to be the Element of Magic.

She would have to have been convinced to be a better person and change her priorities, and even then, I don't think she would have become the Princess of Friendship specifically without the friendship laser. She's smart and knowledgeable and proactive, and if she were a lot more altruistic I could easily see her doing something great enough to become an alicorn, but not "of Friendship," I don't think. Although the whole process of becoming a princess seems pretty arbitrary anyway, so who knows.

It wouldn't be the princess of friendship but princess of something. I don't think Twilight became the princess of friendship... but merely a princess. The friendship part is just a title. If the princess of friendship was an actual thing then i think pinkie pie is probably more deserving.
