Why did the Main 6 befriend Starlight Glimmer?

I think of Starlight Glimmer as a bit of a counterpart to Twilight, mainly because of the fact that she was the leader of a town for a while, she has obsessive qualities, and both come from a friendless background.

The reason why I think she was redeemed was that Twilight was the one to see Starlight's reaction to what her actions would end up doing, and the look on her face shows that Starlight did regret it and Twilight saw that Starlight was just misguided, rather than malicious.

Starlight's biggest fear was to simply lose a friend or friends again. Twilight and the others stopped her without knowing why she did what she did in the first place. Starlight never meant to harm anypony, only when she chose the path of revenge, after she lost the village. Twilight offered her friendship after she finally heard what Starlight truly feels and went through. And I can't see why they shouldn't become friends. Twilight is a kind soul, the princess of friendship, she cares about everypony. She simply offered her friendship to Starlight and made her biggest wish come true. :kindness:

Befriending was the best option because Twilight realized that Starlight went down a dark path due to losing a friend. She knew how important friendship was to Starlight so she offered to fill that void in her heart, hoping that it would save her.

I think the Mane 6 "befriended" Starlight Glimmer in order to keep Equestria safe from possible future overreactions.

It was all a plan by Twilight Sparkle to avoid having to house hunt for a second time. :P
