"I think it's bit too late for that." Jenna stated in somber manner "Even if we did go back, I don't think this can be just forgotten about." "Really, even if we manage to put stop to this somehow, this won't be forgotten for a long while."

"I just wish we could find an easy way to get it all over with," Oliver sighed. "Nothing so far has been simple. Not even the people wanting us to deal with this have been clear. How can they expect us to stop it when they won't tell us anything?"

"Very few things are simple." Jenna mentioned "But this has for now been easier than I expected, I expected us to meet some kind of resistance when we got here, yet, there has been nothing on this side." "It's either a good sign, or a very worrying sign."

"Yeah, and I don't like how quiet it is," Oliver sighed. He kept looking around. "I can't help but feel like something's going to jump out and attack us. I just hope there's nothing else here to do that."

"We shouldn't let our guard down." Jenna stated "But we also should avoid getting too paranoid, this darkness and silence are perfect conditions for one to start seeing and hearing things." "We need to do our best to keep ourselves, and each other, sane."

"Yeah, you're right," Oliver muttered. Despite that, he kept looking around in case something was watching them from afar. He also kept his nose twitching for any peculiar scents, but so far all he could smell was dirt and concrete.

Jenna used her ability to try and see if there was anything nearby interacting with the air, but she couldn't sense anything either "The air is still disturbingly still, it makes me uncomfortable to interact with it." "I could make it move to make things feel slightly alive, but I feel like that would be waste of energy?" she didn't sound sure about it, she was tempted, just to make things less still, but it could risk luring something to them.

Oliver frowned when he heard Jenna say that. The idea that nothing living was anywhere around them made his skin crawl.

"All I can smell is stale," he muttered. "I don't know if that's a good thing or not."

"I don't know if it's good or bad either, but it's not just the smell, the air is stale." "It's like the entire planet is a stuffy room." "Probably not helped by the mold everywhere." "It could be that this place is slowly but surely running out of oxygen, considering the lack of living green plants."

Oliver's eyes widened at that idea. "Running out of oxygen? And we have no way of getting back?"

He swallowed. "Maybe that's why it's so empty here. No one can live here so they all...went somewhere else."

"We have no reason to think there's no way back," Jenna assured "The portal is still open" she pointed at the beam they were following "But even in the worst case scenario, it's really the least of our worries." "It takes a while for two people to spend a planet full of air, years, if not lifetimes." "We will starve or die of dehydration long before needing to worry about that."  "I figured it's empty because nothing lives here, everything is dead, including humans." "However, I said it before, but even still, the lack of bodies bothers me, so maybe you are right, maybe they did go...somewhere. But what about the animals? their bodies aren't here either." it was possible, or even likely, that the moss had something to do with it, but even then, wouldn't there be some evidence?

"Well that's... better, I guess," Oliver muttered, not liking the idea of dying at all, no matter what way it happened.

He looked around for any signs of animals. "Maybe wherever the people went, the animals went with them?"

"All of them?" Jenna asked "I can't feel as little as an insect burrowing underground." "So even if it is the case of them leaving, it raises the question of what happened to everything else? I can believe that humans and animals like cows and such could be moved somewhere, but all of them? birds, insects, rats?" "And then there's of course the question, where is somewhere else?" Jenna let out a frustrated sigh "This place doesn't make any sense."

"That's what I keep saying," Oliver groaned, shaking his head. "I hate it here. We might be the only ones around here that are actually alive, and we're only here because some message told us to. And it didn't even tell us why."

"In the message's defence, it only brought us to the location of the portal, it was our decision...or probably more realistically, my decision, to actually come in." "And while I dislike this too, I still think this is necessary; nobody else has come here, and this most likely does affect our world too if the portals stay open."

"But we hardly found out anything," Oliver pointed out, frowning. "We learned this world is... well, dead, but that's it. We don't know why or how to close these portals. Nothing makes any sense around here..."

"And that's why we are going deeper." Jenna pointed out, pointing at the beam once again "The force keeping the portal open is coming from somewhere, and we know where only by going there." she stopped and took hold of Oliver, holding him from his shoulders and looking into his eyes "I understand you are scared, I am too, I am terrified, I want nothing more than turn around and forget about this." "But I can't, if anyone can do anything, it is those like us, normal people have no chances here, you saw what happened to the military, and I can't just sit by as our world is consumed by...this." "And....I can't do this without you."

Oliver saw the look in Jenna's eyes and swallowed. He could tell she meant what she was saying, and he knew he couldn't leave her to deal with this alone.

"And I'm gonna help you with this," he promised. "I just wish I knew what to do."

"You and me both." Jenna admitted  "I hate to admit it, but I don't have a plan; yes, I want to try to destroy the portals, but..." she looked at the beam "We are already quite far from the portal, and the source is still nowhere to be seen." her fear was more visible now that she had let down her guard "Even if we can destroy it, how are we going to do that and get out?"

Oliver looked at the beam as well, not liking the feeling he was getting from it.

"Unless there's a way we can get out before we destroy it?" he suggested. "Maybe if we can find a time bomb or something."

"That's exactly the problem, we don't have one." Jenna pointed out "If a simple bomb would even be enough, we don't know yet what we are dealing with." "More so, what I'm saying, is that even if we did have one, it too has a max limit, and we need to be able to know how long it will take us to get back." "If the source is somewhere in the city, I can in theory use my powers to cause some kind of chain reaction giving us enough time." "But what if it's not, what if it's several days travel? In theory we can find a working car or something, but we can't rely on that."

"It feels like we don't really have many options," Oliver sighed. "Whoever sent us that message could have at least given us some supplies or something. At least some food and water if we were going to be here for a while."

"They probably figured we'd be smart enough to take some with us, like we have." Jenna mentioned "I do wonder how many others decided to go through their local portals, and if they have made it this far." "Have some of them lost their minds? or given up?"

"If they have, then we probably would have seen someone else by now," Oliver pointed out. "Maybe we're the only ones who ever tried to go through the portal? There hasn't been any signs of anyone else being here."

"Not really." Jenna pointed out "The coordinates on the letter were all over the world, so if we assume the locations are one on one between the worlds, like our portal seemed to be, then it makes sense why we haven't seen anyone." "If someone in Europe went through theirs, and someone in China theirs, we would have no real way to know, as it would be in the Europe and China here too." "Even for us, the closest other portal was hundreds of miles away."
