Angels in MLP

There are many references to angels in MLP- the most obvious one being Angel Bunny. Why do you suppose Fluttershy named him that? Or Angel Wings, the Make-A-Wish character in "Top Bolt". Or Tartarus, which is a prison-like condittion of darkness that the fallen angels (demons) of Noah's day were locked up in, existing as a prison for demonic centaur.

 

What do you guys make of these angelic references in MLP?

I always thought that Angels are believed to be among them am just as we believe them to be.

Other than that Alicorns are pretty close to angelic beings in Equestria.

Or names like Angel can be just words used for something which is white in color (I said this, no matter how silly that sounds). And you know, there are many differences in Earth's Tartarus, and Tartarus in Equestria.

Otherwise I like the idea. But I don't think it can be of much use, or that's just me.

I think angels might live or have lived in Equestria, like many other mythical creatures, and they don't have to be related to religion to be there. I mean, according to the myths Pegasus was the son of Poseidon, but I don't think ponies know who Poseidon is. Same with angels - they just may be a bit different from the traditional ones, but still live in Equestria. Although I don't think we'll ever find out anything about them in the show.

Etymologically, "angel" comes from the Greek word for "messenger." Angel Bunny often seems to be the one to bring Fluttershy news, and being a messenger is a perfect job for a pegasus pony. I doubt that's what the writers were thinking, but it's a thought.

I wouldn't be surprised if ponies had a concept of angels like us (esp. if conceived as the remnants of the soul beyond death), though they might be lumped into the more abstract category of "spirit."

It's rather interesting what is the ponies' take of angels, considering we already have horses with wings . In the Gameloft game, there's a building that produces angel ornaments, and those are basically pegasi with a halo

The dank answer: ... I'm thinking Discord-like eastern dragon type with symmetry.  Add angelic features. May or may not share its style with Sword Maiden. I'm gonna forge one, eventually. Should make a fat blue pegasi guard first though. Sigh.
