Why didn't they explain what happened to the Changelings that impersonated the Mane 6?

Well, the show does have a habit of throwing away some characters only once they appeared on the show.

There are also thousands of other Changelings, I don't see why the show would want to explain what happened to only those ones.

Because the episode was a poorly thought out mess that relied on entirely on fanwank and ripping off a really shitty movie that came out that year

It leaves the opportunity for a story about renegade Changelings open, for one. Otherwise, they were just reformed like all the other Changelings in the hive. I think the reason they didn't explain it is because it's very easy to infer yourself what happened.

They weren't relevant to wrap up the finale. At the moment one can assume that either they escaped and joined Chrysalis in exile or they were shown about the metamorphosis and how it gets rid of their never-ending love hunger. Later we have learned that Chrysalis is alone, dismissing the first assumption.

We had a few hints about renegade changelings who didn't want to metamorphosize in Triple Threat and To Change a Changeling, maybe they were the ones who weren't in the hive at the time Chrysalis was defeated and were still loyal to her for a while.

Did we really need an explanation? I mean yeah we've had hints or what-not of renegade changelings, but I always assumed that the Mane 6 + Spike impersonators were reformed with the majority. I mean, keep in mind, there were separate teams sent to Canterlot and the Crystal Empire, so there's likely a lot more impersonators than just the ones in Ponyville, so if were asking about the latter, there's also the former to consider.

But again; I just assumed they were reformed, but I could be wrong.

How do you know they were at the hive?

It wasn't important. It's easy to assume that they just decided to join Thorax when the mane six returned to Ponyville.
