Is Prince Blueblood really a prince?

I wanna know where anyone got the idea that being royalty automatically means one must be an alicorn too. I think it's more like being an alicorn puts them in a position of power since you probably wouldn't want someone with such power to be anywhere but stage center where everyone can watch them.

I guess Chrysalis would also count as an alicorn and would continue the pattern though.

On a side note, the Grand Duke had more screen time than Cinderella's Prince in that film because the animators back in 1950 were still not experienced to animate human males in a realistic way; they were still better at animating males in a goofy way. They intended the Prince to be realistic is his movements, but the animators weren't ready. That's why the Prince didn't have much screen time like he should and the King and Grand Duke had more scenes of goofiness. It's also why we had to wait until 2006 for the direct-to-DVD sequel, A Twist in Time, where the Prince ACTUALLY does something to get back to Cinderella, instead of having someone else do it.

In the 1950 film, Cinderella and the Prince were rotoscoped. That is, human actors were filmed and their movements projected onto an animation cel which animators traced and then used their image as a direct model for the animation. Rotoscoping was a common feature of many of the early Disney films, particularly for main characters (this is why Snow White moves like a 1920s melodrama actress).

And, I think Blueblood is a descendent of Princess Platinum.

I think that, over the centuries, Equestria has sort of swallowed up various other kingdoms & principalities.  IMO, the nobility was allowed to keep their titles.  It could well be that he is descended from Princess Platinum.   She was a unicorn & had similar attitudes.

I've seen some fanfics that one (or more) of his ancestors was adopted by one of the princesses (Usually Celestia)

I can see there being 3 different possibilities.

1) There are different groups of Royaly and such, its just that one particular group (the Alicorns) are overall the ones most in charge, but each region has its own system. One city may be a republic, another place may have its own royalty. etc. Blueblood might be descended from Princess Platinums line, implying that there may still be a Unicorn King and/or Queen around. (I like this theory)

2) Maybe not all ponies live in Equestria, Blue Blood may be a prince of another country all-together (I don't like this theory)

3) Celestia or Luna once had a child, or another relative like a sister or brother who for whatever reason is not around anymore, likely dead. Blueblood being descended from that individual. (interesting idea, but I don't think its likely)

I would go under the assumption that if someone is related to Royalty as Prince Blue-Blood is to Celestia, that would deem them some form of Royalty as well. In which making him a prince.

EDIT: Going into deeper thought, that would make Shining Armor a prince twice, Being married to Cadence being the first occurrence. Then when Twilight is deemed a princess as well. Double Prince!?!?! Might as well be King! ;)

The term that Blueblood's name is a reference to is defined as royalty by birth. So he is a royal by blood only. He did not earn the position.

I think it was only recently that the terms "prince" and "princess" were seen as any sort of equal in our world. They never really were. In Equestria, there is evidence to doubt that Prince and Princess are on any sort of equal ground.

Contrast how Cadance and Twilight earned their titles by ascension, with Shining Armor who married in and Prince Blueblood who is probably the least deserving royal in Equestria.

Blueblood was originally intended to be a "Duke" but thank Hasbro for underestimating their young audience again, saying that they would not understand what the title meant. Interestingly enough, they actually got to use "duke" and "duchess" to refer to the Maretonian heads of state in the Season 4 finale. In the end, he wasn't supposed to be a Prince anyway, so that throws a wrench into these theories.
