Has anybrony else noticed Twilight using human terminology?

Wishful Thinking

Recommended Posts

For example, she calls the rest of the Mane 6 'girls' on multiple occasions, and seems to forget she's a pony half the time ('anybody', 'nobody', 'everybody' in place of their ponified versions). Now, I'm curious as to why this is, and my brain is still chasing the fog of sleep away, so I can't do a full analysis, if you will.

I've had a theory since episode 14 that it's the Equestrian dragon terminology. I haven't really fixated on this, but it seems Spike is around when she uses our words, so perhaps it's do give some semblance of home...? Though, busting that theory, as far as we know, he's been raised by Twi from birth. He wouldn't know home. Or maybe she learnt it from the baby dragon? And although this is highly unlikely, he does live in a library. Perhaps there's a work on dragon language he's read...? Something to consider. My third theory is that it's the writers' fault, and that they forget how everypony speaks in Equestria. Now, this one seems the most likely, but I'd like to hear your theories.

Discuss! That is, um, if you don't mind. ;)

I actually find it weirder that they even speak an understandable language but that's cartoon logic for ya'.

Not cartoon logic, Pinkie Pie logic! I'm sorry. You practically handed me the bullet, all I had to do was fire the gun.

"Girls" and "____body" is hardly human terminology.

Female ponies can very much be referred to as "girls" and as far as I'm aware, ponies themselves have bodies, not just humans.

"Anypony" is a bit discriminatory, so it's understandable that when around other species, "anypony" would be substituted with "anybody". After all, it's not like the word "body" doesn't exist in the Equestrian dictionary.

You're omitting the fact that Spike says '-pony' consistently. More so than Twilight Sparkle!

She's one of the most well-read, so I don't find it hard to believe. But she isn't the only one to ever have used some of those terms. Hunt around and you'll see the other five saying them here and there, too.

I didn't omit anything, because what you've brought up doesn't effect anything.

Who is Spike surrounded by at pretty much all times? Ponies. So of course he would say "everypony", especially since he grew up around such terminology.

In "Dragon Quest", we didn't see Spike go up to his fellow dragons and ask "hey everypony, what's up?" He just called them "guys", if I remember correctly. The use of "anypony" or "anybody" has less to do with the species of the person saying the word, and more to do with whom they are surrounded by.

Anyways, that's just my explanation, and it probably won't work in every case identified in the show simply because many uses of "anybody" as opposed to "anypony" could have been mistakes on the writers'/voice actor's part.

I agree with the others who have stated that it is most likely for the discimination part. The use of "everypony" would most likely be considered rude around other species, thus why they change to "everybody" since the other species most likely have a body ;)

Also agreeing on the Spike theory, being the only other species around most of the time would mean no harm using the "-pony" termes, no?

But of course, it is a cartoon, which means it follows cartoon logic. :)

Anytime she (or another character) is referring to anyone that is NOT a pony, the "-pony" of "everypony" and similar words is instead traded for the traditional "everyone". Since it is not accurate to call a dragon a pony.

Being a show, there are occasional errors in consistency, but can you honestly say that you always use every single word and phrase correctly? ^_^

Um, they are girls. Besides, if she called them fillies that would be kind of undermining, and mares is seemingly too formal to use all the time from what I gather. Also, not everyone in Equestria's a pony, so saying everybody sometimes isn't exactly out of the question, particularly in 'Over a Barrel' where she was probably referring to both the ponies and the buffalo.

Would you say "anygriffon" if you were a griffon?

Would you say "anydragon" if you were a dragon?

It's the same difference.

(Another creative list of responses by me)

Well Twilight isn't speaking in "Dragon Language"...

If she were she would make an awful mess of the place when trying to use the words "Force", "Balance", and "Push" if you get what I mean!

I'd just count it up to that she learned her lesson from the Hotdiggitydemon Magic.Mov cartoon where Spike questions her for using "anypony".

Or just a slip of the tongue from the script writers that really doesn't need to be fixed once Tara's done her magic with it.

Maybe Tara Strong is trying to make a political statement that it is okay that we aren't "anypony", but being "anybody" is just as good.

Maybe "anypony" is racist since it doesn't include Dragons and Twilight doesn't want to offend Spike.

MAYBE I'm paranoid and like to come up with fake conspiracies because they are fun!

Maybe Twilight was secretly a human once, or still is to some extent. A "Lycanpony" or "Ponithrope" if you will.

Maybe Twilight and Lyra are President and Vice-President of the My Little Human fanclub, and call themselves "Maremen"!

Maybe in Twilight's studies she found out about a secret lost civilization before Equestria of Human Beings who were wiped out by their own hated and intolerance of one another. She finds this lost race fascinating and some of their technology to be powerful (thus her love for science). AND maybe these studies are corrupting her thoughts bringing humanity's evil "Dark Side" if you will into Twilight heart and she will be the villain, transforming herself and an army of followers into Humans in the Series finale.

Or Twilight can stick to gender-neutral greetings like "Hey idiots" or "What's up losers?"

Less confusing, but she likely loses all her friends.

It's amusing to me as my older sister, who isn't half as much into ponies as I am, actually noticed it when Twilight said "everyone" and "everybody" way before I did. When she asked me about it, I was like, 'Uhh...I didn't even notice  ". Goes to show how observant I can be! But I still don't put much thought into it, I seriously doubt the writers did anyway.
