Is the avatar limitation really necessary?

Is there really any reason for Blank Flanks not being able to upload pictures for their avatars? I think it's kinda weird, even with the low post count needed. But it still is kind of awkward.

I did find that a bit strange as well, although the reason for it is to encourage users to make posts. They don't just wanting us to join, make an avatar, and never post.

While it does encourage spam. 5 posts is not a very high requirement. I do not see an issue with it personally.

Uh, how? I can spam right now without 5 posts. Anyways, I don't have 100% issue, just find it kinda weird.

It encourages you to spam to get the 5 posts. Thought that was clear.

Oh. So you're against it too, right? Thought you were the other way around. ;P

I think you are reading too far into my posts. While I dont exactly support it I dont see a problem with getting 5 posts. Theres enough topics to do that in 5 minutes.

This:

To be perfectly honest, people who only want to register a name, put a 100k image on my server, make 3 posts, then leave and never come back again aren't very valuable to the community.

5 posts is a very low limit, but it does encourage people to take a good look around the forums (especially when those 5 posts also grant you 5x the PM storage space, unlimited attachment uploads, and a signature). On their look around, they just may decide that the community is worth staying in. If you're planning to stick around anyway, you'll make a lot more than 5 posts so it shouldn't be an issue. If you're not gonna stick around, I don't have a 100 KB file taking up space on my server for all eternity and serving just about no useful purpose.

Besides, I thought it would be fun to have some kind of progression from being a brand new member (hence the title Blank Flank) to one that's "settled in".

The way I see it it's more along the lines as a prevention against people who join but never post or who post once and then leave. Often times they'll upload an avatar, maybe a sig and then those files just sit there on the server not doing anything. Given, in the grand scheme of things it's a very small amount of space but after a while it begins to add up and there's no reason to risk it if you think a forum might be around for a long time.

Hey, at least you didn't have to make 10 posts.

Don't know how 5 posts is a bother.

At least you can upload your avatar now. :)

I don't see anything wrong with it...

And it's only 5 posts :3

If you are unable to get 5 posts in the first hour you joined here, you should REALLY post more :3

It's a good point. I think it was still ten posts when I joined and I had my avatar and signature within half a day. I felt it added something to see myself go from blank-flank to member.

It made me investigate all the forums to see what was going on there and find something interesting to say. Also gave me time to work out a proper username for myself, and screen-cap an avatar that spoke to me.

Wasn't it 10 posts...?

Either way, my avatar was definitely worth it.

And 100k is alot of data for an image! (Mine was 83k I believe... And my siggy is a little over 2MB WHICH IS HUGE for an image)

This is free data space! The least you could do to earn it is participate in the community a little!

If anything, I think 10 posts (or now 5 posts) is too little!

But what do I know? I'm just a stupid kid.

It's kinda hard to start a nice reputation with no avatar or signature.

It kinda didn't help me in my situation since Introduction Sub-forum didn't count posts too.

That may be, but really, 5 posts is honestly nothing. Start your intro thread, take part in a few pony discussions, then upload your avatar and enjoy being a full member.

^ This is exactly what I explained a few posts back. ^

Admittedly, the avatars really don't take up much space at all, but if we have 1000 members of which 200 uploaded an avatar and have made 0 posts, let's do some math:

200 members * 50 KB avatars (on average) = 10 MB of avatars

10 MB = 10 million characters

Assuming the average post consists of 500 characters...

10 million characters / 500 characters per post = 20,000 posts.

So, I'll have the equivalent of 20,000 posts sitting on my server, doing absolutely nothing. And I'll need to keep those 20,000 "posts" there for all eternity. My server's hard drives are large enough for 10 MB to still be next to nothing in the grand scheme of things, but I'll still have the moral responsibility to hold on to the avatars of 200 people who contributed nothing or almost nothing to the community.

Besides, as I said, it creates a nice feeling of progression. Look at these two posts - it had the intended effect on TwilightSparkle and Lupus:

It's a good point. I think it was still ten posts when I joined and I had my avatar and signature within half a day. I felt it added something to see myself go from blank-flank to member.

It was 10 posts, but we decided to put it down to 5 and remove the limitation on editing your profile as a Blank Flank.

As I said up above, server space really isn't an issue for me - the fact that I allow unlimited attachment uploads up to 50 MB in size each should be proof of that (that said, my server's hard drives are not unlimited - use the space freely, but do not intentionally abuse it by uploading a 10 GB PC game or something).

I think I've found my new online backup solution. ;)

It's a very simple limitation. If it was create 5 threads it would be encouraging spam, but it's just post 5 times which I feel is very nice because it encourages new users to begin taking part in the community and then rewards them.
