every mane six pony needs a different personality and most of those background ponies don't have a personality so I had to rule them out right away, ~

Well, it HAS to be a pony whom the Mane 6 is usually affiliated with in most of the episodes. To be honest, I would say Zecora out of them all. The Mane 6 have always countered problems with her, and I think that she is one of the under-rated protagonists.

Hm, for that I don't know. I would love to know more of Trixie backstory, but I doubt they would make a "villian" into a mane character. So I'm going to say Vinyl Scratch, I mean who doesn't want to know more about her.
