Why Do Non-Bronies Think MLP Is A Show For Only Little Girls

Yeah, most people in general who haven't checked out the show don't even get bronies, not just haters, and, frankly I don't blame them. Like so many other ponies have said on this thread, the show's target audience is younger girls, so people who haven't watched the show are understandably perplexed when they hear the 20+ year old guys like to watch this show. And as long as they simply remain perplexed and confused, I won't begrudge them those feelings... it's only when people who haven't checked out the show become full-fledged haters that I get annoyed. If they eventually do check it out, and still don't like it, then fine, that's their choice, but at least they can then be an unbiased and fair judge rather than just an ignorant hater.

Because despite having a lot of elements that can, and given the reception, clearly do appeal to those outside the target audience, the show is still aimed at a demographic of young girls. The show is a show for little girls. The only thing they find it hard to accept is that it's not only for little girls. That an older, or male demographic could enjoy it too.

 

Society is still very much constrained by societal and media propagated stereotypes and expectations. Liking something that is traditionally not 'for' you is seen as odd, or is frowned upon. As great as it would be if traditional gender roles and binaries disappeared, and the only expectations of us generated by what we like is that of taste or interest, it's unlikely to happen any time soon.

 

But you know what? It doesn't matter, there're plenty of like-minded people in the world, and we don't have to feel bad about what we like or where our interests lie, we can share it with those who understand, and those who don't can think what they will.

The previous incarnations of MLP were negatively received because it stereotypically touched upon what a little girl's TV show "should have" been like - tea parties, dressing up, and all that junk. This is a very sexist and backwards attitude, and these kinds of shows (aimed for little girls) are not very well liked at all. With that in mind, FIM still bears the name "My Little Pony" and therefore it is easy to nitpick and call it out as being girly as well. However, FIM is truly intended for everyone as it touches upon adventure themes and is character driven, something that makes you want to look up to the characters and view them as role models, and there is also much to be learned from the episodes, rather than just simply sitting down and looking at ponies drinking tea and/or gossiping every damn episode. Simply put, FIM receives heat from people who don't know jack shit about it because they think it will be just like the previous incarnations. Sad, but true - however, I can deal with a whole bunch of hate so as long as the fandom keeps on exponentially growing in numbers.

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic is a show about a magical land in which the most advanced race are Brightly Colored Ponies

These ponies have names like Rainbow Dash, Twilight Sparkle, Fluttershy, and Pinkie Pie

Each episode of the show revolves around a moral that centers on the social implications of friendship

The show originated from a 1980's cartoon based around a series of Dolls shaped like pastel colored ponies. This show had subpar animation and poor voice acting. It also centered the ponies defeating lame enemies and relying on the help of two young siblings

Two and a half more generations of that show were created later on. These shows were worse than the original in that they centered around the ponies....doing nothing. These ponies were very typical female stereotypes and the characters never encountered any actual conflict.

 

In conclusion: Little girls typically like brightly colored things and have a strange obsession with ponies. They tend to think things with silly names are cute and rather hilarious. Only children's shows have explicitly stated morals, especially ones about things like friendship. Dolls are generally for little girls. Most little girl shows have lame animation and terrible voice acting, much like the older gens of MLP. This is the fourth generation of a long running franchise that is known for it's lack of quality.

It is really made for little girls, but not little girls only. Faust explicitly explained that she made the show so that parents would want to watch it with their kids, and it shows. MLP has a lot of adult jokes and references that kids wouldn't understand.

ofc it is a show for little girls. If it wasn't it would never have got past the pilot, since the brand is 90% little girls' brand. I got my neices and nephews into MLP in 2012 or so - only the 7 and 5 year girls are still into it. 9 and 12 y/o are way past it now  

But it was also always designed to be enjoyed on another level.
