Let's Talk about Timberwolves

So, what do we know about the creatures of Everfree? That out of all of them, only the Timberwolves hunt in groups. The rest are either not predators *parasprites*, or are all loners who hunt and act completely on their own (the Cockatrice, the dragons, the Manticore, the ursa, etc.)

Now, what else can we assume about them?

Back in the old days, when Ponyville didn't exist, and the Everfree Forest extended into wilderness, with Canterlot up and away from the dangerous creatures on it's mountain cliff, it's assumed the Timberwolves preyed upon animals in that region. Why? Because when Granny Smith and all her settler ponies came down, given the go from Celestia that they could use that piece of land, there where the Timberwolves, attacking Granny Smith reasonably quickly when she entered the woods to pick Zap Apples. However, asides from hearing the Timberwolves howl to mark the time of Zap Apple harvest season, we have not seen or heard of them since. Ergo, my assumption is that they have a specific range of territory that they choose to control in the woods and stick close to it, much like how actual animal groups work. Which means, since we no longer see them endangering anyone going in the woods to our knowledge, something had to push them deeper into the woods.

Thusly, here's my personal drawn conclusion:

Unlike basically all the other creatures in Everfree, the Timberwolves hunt in groups, making them a bit more dangerous as a whole than the singular, random solitary hunters. Granny Smith informed Celestia at some point about these wolves, and she decreed to have them pushed back deeper into the woods, so that they do not pose as much a threat to her subjects. She probably did this using, using say, her guards who might patrol the woods a few times a month to make sure they keep away.

I don't think it's all too hard to assume that they allow the wolves to come close enough to howl, as they mark the intro to Zap Apple season. But as far as controlling and preying in an area, they've clearly been pushed back deeper into the forest.

Everfree Timberwolves are made of wood, right? If so... I would have to question what goes into their digestive system. Or how they hell they eat... assuming they're carnivorous, of course.

Damn you, you beat me to it. Seeing as they're made of wood (it's been forever since I saw that episode so I could be wrong), I feel like all you need is fire and you've got some good timberwolf repellent. Hunting in a pack might not be good because fire spreads.

OMG IM DYING HALP ME

Also, you never know, they could be hiding some bigger treasure deeper in the woods. Much, Much deeper. Or maybe in season 3 hopefully somepony explores in there... and comes back of course but I mean like deep exploration.

While the timberwolves are powerful indeed because of their packs, i don't quite think they are a match for a manticore or cockatrice, those creatures were only defeated because fluttershy knwos how to deal with animals.

The mythical aura from the Timberwolves needs to be expanded upon, make an all Fluttershy episode as she delves into the Everfree Forest and 'Dances with Wolves'.

From what I see they are a wooden structure. So as for diet my best guess is that they probably need sunshine and nutrition from the ground or maybe they eat wood to bulk up. Me and my sis also think they are guardians they my be protecting an ancient evil from being found or item that was sealed away for others safety. As for there life length I think they may be immortal. As you saw in "Spike at your service" when AJ takes them out they reform into a bigger one. That looks like a tactic for beating something bigger or tougher then them. Another thing there was no damage to them so I think there may be a sole stick that serves as there life force and if that stick ever damaged or broken it would harm them greatly.

This just me cause of the way they were shown in the one episode with spike and applejack(forgot name) seems most likely to me the Timberwolves aren't actual living beings but forest spirited that possess the woyld to make these terrifying creatures to protect their areas. That of course is oy my opinion o may be wrong

I have a feeling Timberwolves are the result of wild magic permeating in the everfree. I also have a feeling that something dangerous is trapped there as Celestia has a habit of locking anchient powerful evil up in strange places. I also think that may be why Celestia has Zecora stationed there, to keep an eye out for if this thing that is animating timber and causing other odd flora and fauna stays trapped. Why else would Tirek be blasting trees down in the forest?

They don't seem too concerned about territory, as they pursued Spike & Applejack past the edge of the Everfree. The only other reason that they may stay way from Ponyville, Fluttershy's cottage or AJ's orchard, is due to all the noise, unnatural noise mind you. In Family Appreciation Day, Granny Smith scared off the wolves by banging  some frying pans together, so imagine what noise all the hustle & bustle of Ponyville generates. So the Timberwolves may react to something unnatural to their environment aggressively, if it were a creature (Spike, AJ, GS) or out of fear (loud noise).

Then again, the chaotic magic that flowed through the Everfree when the tree of harmony was depowered may have something to do with all this. Notice how the Everfee appears much safer post "Twilight's Kingdom" than in prior seasons.

P.S. You wanna read an awesome story that features Timberwolves in a cool way, then check out this:
