writing Three new poems

Inkfeather

Recommended Posts

Three poems written over an afternoon of Italien summer weather, it was truly horrible. Anyways, hope you enjoy.

Wish

Followed some advice from Ashbad about my structure, this was the result of some experimenting.

Destiny

Same as the above, another experiment of structure, this one being a little more "fixed"

Parasite

A mix of the above used structure and my usual style.

I actually find that I like the structure in the 2nd poem quite a bit. It seems to naturally flow through the process of introspection. With that said, I think that the 1st and 2nd poems go well together.

In the 1st poem a wish to create, to contribute, and to marvel is expressed. In the last poem, those that enjoy the works of others without actively contributing or acknowledging are likened to parasites. This is an interesting thinking process.

Personally, I'm not quite sure about my thoughts regarding the point that was made in the last poem. On one hand, if you create something it is always nice to be acknowledged in some way. On the other hand, sometimes just seeing others benefiting from your creation is acknowledgment enough.

Reading your poem, I thought about all of the open source software that I make use of on a daily basis. For most of them, I have never even exchanged a word of thanks with the creator of the program. At 1st thought, I was saddened by this, but then I realized something.

I too have contributed some things for which I was not publicly acknowledged. I actually preferred it that way. I created them because I felt a driving force compelling me to do so. I didn't want the constant burden of being told that I did something fantastic. In fact, acknowledgments and congratulations sometimes annoy me. More than anyone else, I can see the flaws in everything that I create. Knowledge of this imperfection compels me to work harder at reaching greater heights in the future.

Besides that, I enjoy creating things mostly for the joy that comes in the process of doing so. I like the challenge that the creative process can bring. For me, finishing something is a reward unto itself. Whether or not this thing is acknowledged by others is not really a dominant factor in my thinking process. However, I do feel a great sense of satisfaction when I see others enjoying something that I had a role in creating.

I don't know. On one hand, I do believe that, all too often, people take for granted things that are provided for their enjoyment and use by others. On the other hand, those that create do not always have public acknowledgment and the claim as a motivating factor.

In this digital day and age, it is so easy to just download something, maybe leave a short comment, and then go on about your business. The action of consuming creative works is easier than ever. From that perspective, perhaps unintentionally, there is a sort of parasitic quality.

The situation would probably be better for everyone if those that were creative had more appreciation of public acknowledgment and those that consume had more willingness to express that appreciation. If this were to happen, then that would help to counterbalance the “speedy consumption” effect. I think that there would be some definite value in people learning to be more appreciative of the products of the creativity of others.

This is the thought I was trying to aim for, since the acknowledgment doesn't have to be direct praise nor does it have to be payment of any kind, but just as you have commented on my work, I have fulfilled part of my first poem, I have given you something for you to enjoy, and you have proven my 2nd poem to be false, now that I move poeple in a way. This in itself has proven that you're not a parasite, as spoken about in the 3rd poem, you acknowledged my work and contributed your thougths about it without having to, simply because you wanted to.

I didn't write to be acknowldged, I wrote to vent about my own thoughts, yet the acknowledgment means that my work is worth something for others than myself, being extra "payment" for the work I did.

Thank you.
