Name changes should be limited or removed

And that's how the internet works.

Silliness aside, I agree. Name changes should be limited to once per two months (if not a longer span).

I got an idea!

How about a feature that gives all friends to a certain user a notification like "Dirty_Harry123 has changed their name to Clean_Harry123"? Then you will know who they are.

See I solved the problem, now where's my "hero" badge? :>

This. It would easily fix the problem and let people have the privilege of changing their name as they please for at least 3 times a month. Be happy it's not like Steam where there is no limit at all. That really is confusing.

Well, this escalated quickly.

Change the rule to one change a month so the anti-name changers can feel like they did something and so people who do change their names can still do so.

To co-exist is to compromise.

I've been on forums where there was no limit to how many name changes you could make at all. People changed their user names every other minute, just to be jokesters. It was horrible. :P

I'm feeling relatively neutral on this subject, because there's a good amount of valid points on both sides. It's a good thing that there was 3 available name changes for me, though, because I somehow accidentally changed my username to my email account, because I went to the name changing module, then left my computer for a while. When I came back, chrome automatically filled in the two boxes (The new username and current password boxes) with my email address for my account and I just filled in my password, hitting enter afterward, because I derped and didn't even decide to check what I was doing. ^_^ I just assumed it was one of those, "login to view your page" kind of things. I then changed it back to Chiaki, because I forgot what I had wanted to change it to, and now I'm Sugar Plum (which I'll most likely stay as forever).

But anyway, there's both good things and bad things for staying where we're at and for changing it to whatever it may be, so yeah, neutral. It isn't that bothersome for me to see new usernames, because I don't befriend anyone anyway, so I would probably side with keeping the limit where it's at, if I had to choose between the two.

I like my way of doing things ...

Pick one name I like and stick with it.

This is what I've done, other than the one name change I did to get this one. I had made my name hardcore_crispy, as I figured this forum would work like others, and not be the advanced type it is.

However, even though I don't change my name and I like the "pick one and stick to it" method, it isn't my place to tell others not to.

Aye, loads of people seem to like having a 'flavor of the week' deal with their name ... or chance it (*cough* Steam) upon every whimsical thought they have.

Whatever makes them happy, I guess.

While I don't care at all if people are allowed to change their name, it does promote a certain level of confusion when people change it so often. Part of a forum community is getting to know each other, and changing a name too often works against that.

While I am personally not a fan of checking people's user name history in order to figure out who in the heck they are, I don't think it's a large enough issue to warrant removing name changes entirely. Honestly, I'd personally be fine with dropping them to two per month myself.

I would like to remind everyone that to remain civil when debating the possible usefulness of new suggestions and features. Everyone has a right to their opinion, and it's all right to get a little riled up, but please try to keep calm and control of your emotions. Remember: If you don't have anything nice to say, then don't say anything at all!

My opinion on this is reducing it to one or two per month, really. I get irritated when people change their names often and I have to check in their history too. Sometimes, I like to play around with it myself, but I always keep the "Arylett" part of my identity. Many just change their names completely and it gets rather irritating.

I don't know anyone's name. I know people, here, based on their avatars. It's not that I actively ignore people's names, but rather, that's just the way my brain works. Should we restrict people changing their avatars, as well, just because I have a hard time recognizing someone when they change theirs? No, we shouldn't. You complain about people properly identifying themselves, but it's already an anonymous community. Therefore, it's the individual's prerogative to identify how they please, even if that means, for them, changing their name a lot. Allow me to illustrate the downside of this. I was part of a different online community before. They had a policy where you could only change your name once a month. I changed my name, at one point, because I wanted to try it out. I didn't really check, and I ended up submitting a name that was wrong. And it was a character name in a community where everyone knew that it was a mistake. (It would have been like someone here naming themselves "Rainbow Das" - obviously a mistake.) I asked the administration to change it for me. Even though I explained that I'd made a mistake, because of their policy, they wouldn't change it. So, for the next month, I felt like an utter and complete moron every time I logged in or made a post, just because I made one little mistake. What about people in that position? What about people who make an impulsive name change, but then want to change it back? Even if some people use it to be annoying, I feel that the current policy on name changes is reasonable.
