anyway what's everyone's thoughts on this? Does anyone even know when Windows 8 will come out?

from what I read about it windows 8 does sound like an OS that will not be as good as windows 7. but I'll wait and see.

I tried out a sort of "preview" for it and it made me think of the interface for the X-BOX 360

I still have Vista.... If it's worth my time, maybe I'd look into it. What happens when you get a new OS or whatever it is? Also, do you know how well it handles games?

I'm not getting windows 8 anytime soon. I had the developer preview for awhile and while I got used to the metro interface, it's just too incompatible with my current hardware and would BSOD every two and a half seconds.

Windows 8 is an operating system for people who want their computer to act more like a tablet. If you are someone who likes using the mouse and having the start menu etc, then Windows 8 will be more an annoyance than anything else.

Then again -- it is an EVEN windows release... They always seem to mess those up... I mean look back... Windows 7 good. Windows Vista bad. Windows XP good. Windows ME bad. bad bad bad...

Windows 7 is wonderful, I've used WIndows 8 and it's horrible, it's like someone put the IOS as their main computer operating system. It's all touch based, not mouse and keyboard based, sure it still works, but it's not nearly as nice. Plus, from what I've read, it's not as Linux friendly, and Microsoft might be trying to push their own app store thing. Which means you wouldn't be able to download any random program off the internet and try it. That's extremely limiting.

And frankly, it's terrifying how accurate this chart is/will be:

I talked to someone who interned for a company over the summer that had him making Windows 8 apps. He said it wasn't going to be as bad as vista and that most things are compatible with it, but he did say that it probably wouldn't be as much of improvement as windows 7 was simply because windows 7 is already pretty good. I probably won't get it simply because I don't feel like buying an OS thats not really adding that much.

Do you have any proof of windows 8? If you don't, I won't believe you. (I really have nothing to say, but this minimum thing really gets on my nerves.)

Lol what do you mean proof of Windows 8? Edited by Bohtty

Windows 8 has been designed for touch screens, tablet pcs and people who are just generally not looking for "real" usage from their PC, it's simplistic design will help new PC users but be a hindrance to the hardcore user, anyone with a large amount of programs or games will most likely find windows 8 to be a travesty.

I've also heard that the features that allow you to drag windows and place them(like windows 7 snap feature) work very poorly, which honestly would irritate me. I will be sticking to windows 7. :P

Windows 8 is going to be bad for anyone who doesn't use a computing device with a touch screen.

I've seen previews of it, and Microsoft has made it way more optimized for using touch screens. A lot of the scrolling interface is different and all. Plus, I'm not a fan of that start menu thing.

Still, if you claim to be tech savvy, yet you run/want to try something besides Windows 7(or XP..)/BSD/Linux, then shame on you. :P

Truly though -- It is going to be windows hate -- Windows 8 is going to be the biggest bomb ever. I will put it this way -- I actually had some microsoft stock till I saw what windows 8 was going to look like and on that I sold. The interface reminds me of the old prodigy interface from before when half the people who frequent here were born.

It is going to be worse than windows BOB.

I was at Staples (or OfficeMax...don't quite remember) the other day, and somehow got into a discussion with one of the employees about Windows 8.

And the funny thing is even the employee--paid on commission, and paid to sell you whatever he can--said that with Windows 8 "You may as well take everything you know about Windows, and throw it out the window" [exact quote, not an Fghik paraphrase.] I'm not quite sure how "bad" it is, but I'm not looking forward to it. Really, based on what I've read into it, Microsoft should have just split their company, and promoted this as a whole new operating system; and continue to push out the crap we all know and lo...err...learned to deal with.

Huh, that's not what it gave me the first time. Bah, it's probably because I'm really tired. Silly Google!

it's simplistic design will help new PC users but be a hindrance to the hardcore user, anyone with a large amount of programs or games will most likely find windows 8 to be a travesty.

And see, there-in lies the problem for me. I'm one of those "power-users" one of the first things I do with a new PC is alter critical system files, turn off all security/are-you-sure warnings, all sorts of stuff like then. I'm often digging around in the program files folder, or hidden folders like Appdata. I don't want all future Windows OS's to be for users who don't do jack on their PC! I don't want big jelly icons! I have a precise mouse! I don't want simplistic interfaces with a bunch of menu's to do complex stuff! If my OS looked like this:Posted Image So be it! As long as I can tell what I'm doing and do what I want to do. (The picture is of the interface from Blender, a 3d opensource suite for those who don't know.) I'd move to Linux only but I still need Windows for some applications, unfortunately.

Windows 95 isn't that bad. It had it's limitations and flaws, but it pretty much set the standard for the Windows GUI for 15+ years. Not to mention 98 was way less stable. (Unless we're talking about 98 SE, in which case that chart is relatively accurate.)

I'm still running XP on my PC's, I haven't had a really good reason to upgrade. I've used 7, and honestly if I had some cash burning a hole in my pocket, I'd probably buy it for my netbook just to be a bit more up to date. (Not my desktop though, there's a certain way XP works that I need it for.) Windows 8? Could be good I guess, I haven't even tried out Metro yet, but it seems like the major OS players (Apple and Microsoft) seem to have this pattern; release an OS that has a lot of new features, but is full of bugs and runs worse than it's predecessor. Then release an OS which doesn't have a whole lot of new, but fixes most of the bugs and other issues of the previous release. Rinse and repeat.

Yeah, I didn't have much issue with 95 myself, but I did find 98 better, for me at least, it was more stable.

XP was the most wonderful OS I've ever used save Ubuntu. It never bothered me too much, and always let me do what I want when I want.

I recommend upgrading to 7 if you have the cash to burn (Vista is atrocious, avoid it at all costs. Just horrible.) 7 was weird to me at first, it's explorer (what you use to view folders for those who don't know) program is a little different, but once you get used to it, much better. One of my favorite features (A small thing, but I use it a lot) is dragging a Window to one side of the screen and it resizes to 50% of the screen automatically. So in two clicks I can have two folders (Any window really) side by side to fiddle with.

Plus Windows 7 is compatible with some of the newer, top-end software and hardware I use, so I kinda need it. But mostly I just find it a little bit quicker to use than XP. And shinier, oh lawdy, all that shiny has gone straight to my head. :P

EDIT: If you do get it, first things first, one down-side of it is it bothers you with security questions a lot. Y'know, do you really want to run this program, blah de blah de blah. So I just turned it all off. Much easier on me now. Because yes, it was me to who told my computer to open the very suspicious looking .exe named Minecraft. I mean really Windows! C'mon!

That's true! I'd love to live under it if I wasn't forced to use Windows. (Steam and L4D2 are coming to Linux soon though! YAY!)

If you don't mind me asking, what OS do you use then? Or do you use Windows and just not pay attention to what's happening with the latest stuff?

Actually I didnt have much direct experience with windows 95 -- I was happily using OS/2 at the time. OS/2 Warp was better than windows 98 in my opinion as well but by that point one didnt have much of a choice -- windows had already won the OS war with much better marketing. Charlie Chaplin commercials for OS/2 -- please.

Macs, ugh, my sister and father love Macs so I've had some uh... quality time with them. To put it nicely, let's just say I would rather use Windows 8.

I find it odd I dislike OSX though, as IOS has proven to be really good, but alas, twas not to be I suppose.
