"Better." said Jack, "Now that you can materialize your spirit and magic energy, I want you to make a shield out of pure demon energy as well."

Nightfall started to make a separate shield, which started out as fully black. But as it grew, it become a deep blue, a bit darker than he was.

"Aight, Jack. It's growing. This shield is stronger, I will assume, since you tend to do things in that order. Now, please... When will I make a weapon from pure energy, besides my lightning sword?"

"Sorry," Wits said. "Until the story is over, I cannot die. And you are far from able to kill me." He prepared a spell. "Now, your arguments have proven invalid, you have not made signficant attempt to kill me, and I cannot kill you at this time. Would you kindly piss off? I've got work to get done."

Jack threw Nightfall something that appeared to be the wooden hilt of a sword. "Catch."

Nightfall caught hilt and swung it around gracefully. He slowly tried sending energy into the sword, a bit surprised the sword would take the energy. He kept swinging it around, focusing more energy by using centripetal force to draw the energy to form a sword tip.

Maven sighed from inside the the cabin, bored and feeling worthless. Where did he say they were going? Some 'needlessly large' structure? She sighs, getting up, exitting the home, and walking towards a large structure nearby. She paused at the door, then inched it open to see if this was a good time.

Nightfall caught hilt and swung it around gracefully. He slowly tried sending energy into the sword, a bit surprised the sword would take the energy. He kept swinging it around, focusing more energy by using centripetal force to draw the energy to form a sword tip.

 

"That is called a Trial Sword." Jack explained, "It's a conduit for all five different types of energy. It was carved from an ancient tree that grew to great heights by absorbing the surrounding life. Each pony or demon who uses the sword will create a different weapon. For Butajiri it became the Banshee Shriek. For you it should be something different and probably without the demons."

Nightfall kept swinging it around, the motions getting faster and closer to his body. He was letting more and more energy surge into it, using the circular motion draw energy into the sword.

"All right, so you want me to make a sword? Any sword? Easy."

He closed his eyes, and the swinging sped up. A sword-shape became distinct slowly, and a lightly silver color became apparent.

Maven entered, wondering aloud, "I wonder what mine what look like... Umm, sorry. Your house is kinda boring, no offense." I guess it make sense though; you seem to think you're going to die... I am curious what it would look like for me though. She waited to be told to leave, expecting something rude.

 

(So how does the trial sword work? You touch it, and it fuses with you, changing into... what? Something with a hilt, or your favorite type of weapon?)

Nightfall's new sword was being created quicker than he'd hoped. "Not too bad of a sword." Jack commented, "And it doesn't appear to be summoning damned souls, which is always a good thing to know. Do you feel weaker or stronger when you hold it?"

Maven took out her flute and sat in a corner, fiddling with it. She was also scowling, He didn't really answer my question. Maybe he just doesn't know... She shrugged, feeling inspiration. She put the flute to her lips and played a song about sword-crafting. It didn't necassarily fit the situation, but she didn't exactly care to much. She did, however, play it softely.

"Stronger. Shocking? It feels more natural."

The sword was growing a bit faster than Nightfall expected. He tossed it up, making it spun around like a pinwheel, then catching and holding it towards Jack.

"There. Got it."

He looked over at Maven.

"Don't be down, Maven..."

She smiles, blushing, "Oh you and your fancy swords," she says between rests. She started thinking about a slightly different swaord and blushes, "If that thing's like Buki- Buka- The last sword-weilding demon's we've fought, then it probably has an ability that makes it worth the energy it takes, yes?"

"Good to know it makes you feel stronger rather than weaker," Said Jack, "If you were to feel weaker just by creating the sword, that would mean that the Trial Sword was attempting to suck out your soul. Of course I wouldn't have given this to you if I didn't think you were ready. You have enough energy to master the Trial Sword. This weapon is a part of you. What do you intend to call it?"

Nightfall thought a moment as the sword started sparking for a moment.

"Demon Blitz."

He just looked at the sword. As he said that, it sparked a bit more, some lightning shot out, and it calmed down.

"It really is a part of me. I can hear it, telling me what I need to do next."

"Yes," Jack said to Maven, "The Trial Sword will usually come with an ability. The ability, however, completely depends on the user. Butajiri wanted fame, so he was given a 'Show Stopping' display of power with no real punch to it at all. Hopefully yours will be more useful."

"Yay, lightning! I have songs for that!" She grins, and then turns to Jack again, "So, there's a wooden handle, that's magical. And that makes sense," she raises an eyebrow. She pulls out her own bow-sword and looks at it, And I speant how much on this again? Of course he gets his free.

"The rules," Wits shouted out as the pony walked away "I need the rules. Am I damned, or can I survive? Are you bound by them, too? How do I win? What are the stakes?" He slowly, cautiously walked a bit closer to the pony so that he couldn't ignore him as easily as from far away.

"Trial of the worms, you are the defence. If the eight of you can survive without being killed by your greatest sins, our race will be allowed to live. That will not happen." Karasu said without looking at Wits.

 

"Do you want to see what that sword can do, now?" Jack asked Nightfall.

"It's telling me right now... I can feel it, hear it... Right... OK, so when can we go out and slay demons? Wait, no, that was stupid. What's our next move in the plan? And please tell me it involves Maven..."

Nightfall said seriously as he muttered the last sentence. He knew he had to follow Jack's plan, or like the other times he would end up nearly dead.

"The next 'move in the plan' is for you to hone in your strength. There are five different types of energy: Life, Magic, Spirit, Demon, and Blood. Although your body can use four of these, you haven't mastered a single one. I can not stay here and train you. There are a few things I need to do. I will be leaving now. Possibly for a long time. You will fight, get stronger, and protect this city. When I come back, I want you to be strong enough to kill me."

Maven started imagining her sword. It would be light grey, and skinny, so I could move it in quick, slashing movements. About, an inch and a half in width. The hilt would be a modified Treble Cleff mark. It would be sharp on one side, and a music staff would go up the blade. I'd call it Soul Singer. As she thought about it, her tune changed subtly, giving off the impression of the sword.

Jack knew as much of friendship as he did of puppies and kittens, and he loathed them all the same. Yet, somehow he found himself not wanting to leave Nightfall, Den, Wits and Maven. 'I've done the one thing I was never supposed to do,' he thought, 'I've turned allies into friends. I cannot linger here.'

He looked at Jack as the lightning in his sword was enveloped by something that looked like glass. The lightning still wriggled inside. He got into attention.

"It was nice knowing you, Jack. Even with you calling me names. I've learned several things. Thanks."

Maven happened to be looking at Jack, and saw a brief flicker of uncertainty,"Hey Jack, you all right?" She asked from the corner. Jack uncertain was something she was more uncomfortable with than Jack training Nightfall to kill him. Her thought of a sword were pushed aside as she studied his features.
