The spider led Nightfall away from the cafe. He continued to mumble a few things as he walked. After some time, they came across a wooded clearing at the outskirts of town. There sat Jack, leaning under a mulberry tree with a curious orb. When Jack saw that they were close, he lifted the black orb with one hoof and pointed to Nightfall with the other. "Do you care for any ponies in this city?" he asked, "Would you protect them at the highest cost?"

 

Nightfall began to question sending his soul clone. The mulberry tree, him relaxing there, his spider, the orb... Something wasn't right.

"Of course I do. I'm a cop. But I need to know the cost..."

He almost started backing up. This pony seemed... like one wouldn't want to be around him for long.

Jack asked another, seemingly unrelated question. "What do you know of the demon race? Do you believe in their existence? I assure you this has a point." The orb swirled around his hoof like a bug.

The clone shifted his hooves into a slightly ready fighting position.

"I have business to take care of. Your spider wouldn't get the message that you were to meet me in front of the capitol building later."

Maven noticed him following her again. She also noticed another him going with the spider. She sighs, but slows down for Nightfall. "Lead on, Captain, " she says, putting the flute to her mouth. She plays without another word; a song that didn't really effect other ponies other than to tell them she was fearful, agitated, and nervous.

"You idiot!" Jack yelled, "You need to be here in person! I cannot keep him stable for long! You must believe me, I'm trying to help!"

Butariri continued, "You don't strike me as the kind who cares about fame. My proposal is that I help you in exchange for all of the recognition. And if you think I am as weak as my face implies..." He turned his head and looked back. When he showed his face again, his eyes were yellow with red slanted pupils, his teeth were long and sharp, and his horns grew large enough to be seen above his hair. "I'll get ugly soon enough, just you wait!"

She said nothing for a long time, playing the song instead. Tehn she put her flute away while she thought of what was bothering her. "... I do not trust that spider, and I personally don't think it was smart to send any form of representation. How ever, I'm not sure if my feelings are justified."

Nightfall stopped walking. He turned to Maven, looking in her eyes.

"Excuse, I must get some questions answered."

With a small flash of light, he disappeared completely.

 

The clone sued and closed his eyes, being slightly lifted into the air, appendages, spread out. There was a flash of bright light, and suddenly the real Nightfall was there.

"All right. My clone wanted me here. Now, questions first: what is coming that I need to be stronger for? What will happen when I absorb the orb? And what is in this for you? Why help me? You didn't want anyone to win, so why beef me up so I can win?"

The Maven sighed and resumed her tune. When she made it to town hall, it made the private guardspony nervous.

 

"Halt! State your business," he says.

 

The Maven puts her flute down and smiles innocently. "I'm here on behalf of Captain Nightfall; he's a little held up at the moment."

 

"So your police?"

 

She laughs musically and the guard lightens up a bit. "No, just a collaborator."

 

He smiles, and let's her in. He's not really sure why, but he trusts her. She puts her flute away and goes to see the mayor.

Scout's eyes when wide when the pony started to turn demonic, "By Celestia... how could she let these things exist?" he whispered to himself, the whole process was stomach churning, I can't imagine what he might be doing... but there is a plan, i'm sure of it... can't go jumping to conclusions, but i need to get in on this.

Nightfall was confused, nervous, and concerned. He hated being rushed to make decisions that could change his life, and he didn't know what was in the orb. He sighed.

"I'll take it, as long as you can promise me no ill side-effects, it will have a positive effect, and nothing wrong will happen to my friends."

Nightfall opened his mind and prepared to receive the orb.

This orb does not only contain power. It also contains the soul of a demon. I have used this same spell on myself. Though the demon I have within me is considerably stronger than this one. His name is Genbu, a lower D class demon. That being said he has enough energy to power a city block. Once you absorb this, he will be trapped inside of you and you will not be affected by him. However, he will resist you by putting your body through agonizing pain. The pain will continue until you have absorbed him completely. It can take hours, sometimes even days. Genbu is weak, so it should not take that long. I would not give this to you unless I knew that you could handle it, but if you give into the pain, you will die. Here are your options, take the orb and risk death now, or remain as you are and face the certain death of you and your friends later. The choice is yours."

"Woah, woah no. No demons. I will take no part in things with demons. No, if there is a demon in it, I will not take it. I will not be fueled by demons or stolen power."

Nightfall got in a slightly defensive position and began backing away.

"As I said, he will not affect you once the process is over," Jack said clinging to hope, "I have done this with a much more powerful, C class demon and I have not heard from him since. But if you do accept death, then so be it. You will die as a hero, and this city will fall."

Nightfall started backing away a bit faster, and slowly lowered his guard, hoping this pony wouldn't force anything upon anypony.

"I'll die without stolen power or evil things, thank you! I'm a cop, obviously, and I do not want such power, as you say it is.."

Maven stared around town hall. This was surprisingly her first time in the building, and momentarily forgot that she was angry. Then she remembered and it put her into a foul mood. She went to the bathroom to freshen up and hopefully brighten up, and then she knocked on the mayor's door.

"Then I wish the best for you. Do not worry, I will dispose of Genbu. I do not doubt your courage, only your ability to preform the tasks you are responsible for. If you change your mind I can summon another." Jack pressed his hoofs around the orb and it exploded in a cloud of black mist, then he opened his front legs wide. "Now that you know I am a malificarum, am I under arrest?"

"I cannot arrest you simply because you can control demons and use their power. However, any offenses against the law, and I will be forced to arrest you."

Nightfall stopped, and teleported to right outside of the town hall.

 

"Come in," said the mayor.

The Maven came in and approached the mayor. She looked around, thinking, Typical official office. Typical free for his own life. Typical mayor. "The Captain should be here soon; he had some business to do. May I have a seat?" She asked, bored and tired. The coffee hadn't been enough.

Meanwhile, Nightfall was at the entrance.

"Have you seen a mare come in? Some kind of mask-"

"Yes," the guards replied quickly. "Yes, she entered the building."

"Thanks."

He ran in the Town Hall, finally locating the mayor's office and entering it.

She sat when Nightfall entered and allowed herself one quiet, displeased note into her flute. "I'm really sorry, Mr. Mayor, but do you have any coffee?" I wonder how Sapphire's doing at the station.

 

Sapphire had a going tally on the phone calls she had answered. It was currently at 83, and counting. It would've been past that, but she'd had to do a few things, like pet retrieval.
