Luna was trapped in the moon for a thousand years.

 

But what the whole Luna fans subculture seems to not realise/ignore is the following.

 

Nightmare moon was sent to the moon

 

Nightmare moon returns to Equestria

 

It required the elements of harmony to restore woona.

 

So why is all the dayum fan art all of LUNA on the moon and not dat Nightmare moon when they describe those 1000 years?

I half suspect it is because Luna is cuter and therefore will get all the d'aaaaaaaaaawwwww factor.

There are a few artists that have nightmare on the moon instead of Luna though.

Nightmare Moon is definitely not only a "nickname".

 

From what I know, NNM is Luna's appearance changed by some kind of dark magic and that the dark magic changed her characteristics dramatically. Heck, even angry Luna from S2E4 is vastly different from NNM in terms of personality.

 

My personal (and probably unlikeable as hell) theory though, is that Luna, being the younger one, and thus less experienced, allowed her jealousy to manifest a dark shell of some sorts around her. Perhaps even unintentionally.

That is a terrible justification. But fine if you want to play with that card. You're apparently a naruto fan (it explains alot and I will not hide the fact that I hold contempt to the shounen big 3 fans).

 

The ninetailed fox was sealed because of its power. Celestia could not beat nightmare moon.

 

So she sealed her on the moon where her power is useless. If Luna could revert to her normal form then things wouldn't be a matter of using the elements of harmony.

 

It would merely be a matter of beating Nightmare moon until she can't retain her form. Nightmare moon vs Celestia and Equestria. Her rebellion wouldnt have needed to be quelled by sealing her if that were the case.

Nightmare Moon is nothing but a mere shadow of her former self consumed with hatred and wanting for power. Luna's true self is consumed by the darkness which is Nightmare Moon. Nightmare Moon is possibly an evil spirit that took over Luna when she became bitter, so Luna had no control over her actions anymore, when she has been twisted and turned to evil.

 

It's also sorta like when a Jedi turns to the Darkside to become a Sith, they think they are in control of their actions but the Darkside is controlling them and is slowly but surely destroying what good is left in them.

 

So in conclusion I bet Nightmare Moon wasn't really all that upset at all for the past 1000 years on the Moon, she is no longer Luna she has no understanding of these feelings you call love and sadness, she only understands that she wants power.

 

When she was restored to her former self by the Elements Of Harmony she was not bitter but sorry that she been bitter, for her bitterness turned her into Nightmare Moon.

To answer the OP, it's really just a matter of 'Luna > Nightmare Moon' in the minds of most people. Ergo, they either choosingly ignore or forget the fact that it was Nightmare Moon on the moon and not really Luna as we knew Luna.

My head cannon is that the EoH don't work properly if they're used by just one pony, the harmony of friendship requires at least 2 beings to exist. Celestia forced them to work when she fought NMM but because they were misused the elements rejected Celestia and banished Luna until a new generation of worthy bearers would be born to return her to normal.

Luna and Celestia wielded the Elements together to beat Discord. The Mane 6 repeated the feat later. They got the same result - Discord turned to stone. Also, the Elements work only when its users are in harmony with each other. So my theory is that when Luna became Nightmare Moon, the harmony between the sisters was broken, so the Elements could not work at full power. The end result being that the best Celestia could do was to seal her away, instead of restoring her to her usual Luna form. Later, the Mane 6 were in complete harmony and could therefore break the enchantment (or whatever it was) that made Luna into NNM. It explains the different results and is consistent with what has been shown. I think it's pretty sound, but further developments may prove it wrong or something.

 

PS. NNM was sealed in the moon, thus making the crater silhouette. Her physical body was never on the moon in the first place. So really, whether a fan's picture has Luna or NNM is irrelevant - it's just as incorrect in both cases. However, I think at least some of the artists know that, so I would chalk it up to artistic interpretation, which justifies either case equally. In other words, to complain about the issue at all is to miss the point.

I think its mostly because Luna is 20% cuter. Even if nightmare moon would make more sense technically. However they are the same charaector its just nightmare moon is sort of like her evil shadow or something. Thats how I've always pictured it.

There was also that one time she became nightmare moon with those teeth or whatever but that's probably some other magic

One can not go beside the fact that Luna is just adorable... So of course the community is going to draw her on the moon, instead of nightmare moon... Plus they are basically the same character, but with a different look.
