What are your thoughts on Equestria Daily?

I don't know if there has been another topic on this but...this is something that has been really bugging me for a while. I've always hear both the good things and the bad things. But...there's a lot of people who think that EQD is so Celestiadamned elitist and biased, that it's almost as if the site was corrupted on the content it shows. I'm sorry if I said it wrong, I really don't know how else to put it, especially because it's all a matter of opinion really. But...this is something that I posted recently on another topic, but I'll put it again, so as to make myself more clearer. I don't know just HOW elitist is EQD to be honest. It's the site I frequent the most, and one I'll never stop visiting, as much as the others that I visit almost as much as EQD. I know getting in EQD is hard, but...I think, that the reason they get so many bad things is about there choosing, is because there isn't as much things as people would like to have, considering just HOW MUCH there is in this community. But honestly, I don't believe handling a site like EQD is easy. I don't know just how many people handle it, but it's probably not only not easy, but it's also not easy where and how to choose. After all, again, there are SO many things PER DAY that who knows just how much it would take to get them all right. I think they are a bit allowed to be somewhat biased, especially on the popularity thing, because they have to try to put the best, as if it was a true news site, coupled with the music, fics, art etc. And it's not easy to check it all in time to make everything in a somewhat scheduled update, which even now it's not exactly as a precise as a clock. But then again, this is me. I don't really know. Hell, this could be me just being innocent. But...in fact, that kind of content can almost compliment, in a way. Think about it. Sites normally try to put what is general to all, and the stuff that DOESN'T appear in other sites. So, what one site doesn't show, the other can. It's already difficult to have everything important and good on one site. So, what EQD shows, may not appear on Derpy Hooves News (which I think is the other important site for news, excluding the Round Stable, that is news only), And viceversa. Besides, EQD is the one site that shows more variety in category variety. So, they have to have stuff that is from all of it. And I'm sure it's not that easy. To be honest, I don't know if this is the correct way to look at it, which is why I ask people to to put their thoughts, and what they think of it. Maybe it really IS all of a matter of opinion, and I'm just overthinking it. Or maybe I'm just too innocent. I really don't know .

They have grown so much that they have become THE source for MLP news, and thus their words and what they present can unintentionally influence the fanbase just like all major media outlets. It's up to them if they want to just present the news or if they want to add their opinions into things and draw that fine line.

 

Personally I stopped going there now that we have the news feed coming here and I stopped writing my fanfic for them to post. They've been duped a little too much by false reports for my liking.

I visit EQD every hour. I love visiting EQD, I always like seeing people's reaction to certain things. It also helps remind me of certain things that I stopped checking.

 

Now, I can't really understand the hate on them.

 

Some hate is just a little extreme. For example, I was subscribed to this one person on youtube. She combined both let's players I watched and ponies. It was awesome. One of her videos got on EQD, and to make sure none of them ever did again, she deleted all her pony videos.

 

It also has a nice selection of pony art and music. Even if they are biased on the selection. Also, its the place where the important people on the show go. We even sometimes get responses from them.

 

I can see why someone would get mad at them for being biased on what they accept, but I can't see why someone would hate them overall.

Basically, Seth only puts in the things that he likes. If you send something in, he (and all the other pre-viewers/listeners) will only put it on EqD if they like it, whereas what they should be doing (as one of the largest and most influential brony news sites on the web) is finding stuff themselves and reviewing it, as well as finding news out themselves.

 

Having to have someone send something to you is bad journalism. Sure, maybe if someone does send you something noteworthy that you haven't discovered and isn't incredibly famous is ok, but if you have to have an entire fandom submit things for your blog? It just doesn't work.

 

Going back to what I said before about only putting things that they like, brony rapper Yelling At Cats revealed in a thread on /mlp/ that he was once a pre-listener, and that Seth told them that they could only put on things he liked, instead of reviewing and critiquing, like a proper news/media blog should.

 

Also, all of the popular musicians/authors/artists will get featured no matter what. A great example is The Living Tombstone, he will always get his things on EqD no matter what. It is a rarity to see unpopular artists get featured on EqD anymore. I recall seeing a non-pony song (a cover of 'Up All Night' by Blink-182, covered by ShadyVox) being put up.

 

I personally think we need a new brony news blog. I for one would actually be willing to start one, but I don't think I have the time to do it.

That's the thing. It's so big, that people aren't gonna leave it unless someone actually comes out and says what is wrong with them, which has been done many times, but to not a large enough audience.

 

The main reason they do so well covering the show is mainly because other people submit the news to them, therefore showing lack of journalistic skills in that category.

I think something we can ask EQD is, to make the have a pre-reader team that is more...er...consistent. In both actual review AND personality. At least, the thing that seems to be there is that it is inconsistent. Also Crona, I've been told to send my fic to you (in the future for now) because you make good critiques. So, expect mine in the future before I even post on EQD. I trust both enough by now (if you wish to read it that is )

See? This is what I mean. You both have a completely different opinion. And I'm sure if we go on a poll, it would be 50/50. So my question is, is people getting affected by personal experiences rather than a good opinion/critique?

I check EQD twice a day. I usually just go there to check out some awesome music. They are pretty elitist, but running a site the size of EQD can't be easy.

Exactly. Sethisto did say, that it was a site so bronies could gather and out what they felt. I think originally, he thought it was going to be more of a forum than anything else. Then the site grew, a lot, and more people came to help with it, the MLP crew came in the site, and thus, it grew to what it is now. I think the reason they are so elitist is because they are so big, they are too damn careful people will think. Thus, the bias on the more probable important or popular stuff, rather than anything else. Plus, imagine if the site would contain twice the things it did now. It would be not only more difficult to handle, but more difficult to search. The bad thing would be if they did actual bad reviews on it (which is why I wondered the thing about a more consisten pre-reader team, for example). It's not bad, but it could improve on that regard. But this is just me . I don't really know, to be honest.

Dude, don't you think you're too harsh? The pre-readers may not be consistent, but I'm sure the other isn't that bad. Plus, regardless of what Sethisto does in his free time (and neither you or I know. Nor should we care), he's the one who came with the idea of EQD, which isn't bad at all, to be honest. But again, matter of opinions. Also, do you mean Cynder as in the Spyro The Dragon character? (which brings the question, why would that even matter if it is?! Or any other character for that matter?!).

Both of my previous posts were written really fast, and the only reason this one has this much thought put into it is because this is the longest I've had three bars for quite a while. Long story short, it's one of my many perma-tabs.

 

Truly, being a part of this fandom, I will have no other way of keeping up with the best and latest pony, fandom and show news, than EqD. It's a perfectly-run website in my opinion, and they always seem to have interesting stuff, in my opinion. I go there every single day so I don't fall back behind, there are multiple posts there every day. But that's not to say it's a bad thing, the fandom moves as fast as Rainbow Dash on sugar, so there's nothing else to do but to check EqD to see what's up.

 

I'm a regular when it comes to checking out the Comic, Plushie Comp., Drawfriend Stuff, and Custom Comp. posts. Those I always try to keep up with, because those are what peak my interest. I cannot stand thinking about actually catching up with everything they post there, it's just so much! Unfortunately, I have finalized the fact that I'm not too into reading fanfics (for their length, I'm not a big reader), so I vaguely check those out, but it's good to see all the staff is on top.

 

Also, it's nice to know that there are long-recurring and reliable staffies, such as Cereal, PK, Seth, Cal, etc. I find that they're all a merry bunch.

My router would need to be replaced first.

 

Plus, I kind of have my hands full, as I have 40 more videos to make. And that's about 5 or 6 hours of rendering I have to do. Then I have to upload all of them and assign them to playlists on my Youtube.

 

I probably won't be getting back to this subject, because I've been swamped with making these 110 videos the last two and a half days.
