Why does everpony think that Celestia is such a powerful ruler?

I don't get why Celestia is considered such a great ruler. I am talking about in the show and in the fandom. I say this because in the show, it seems as if she is fairly a gentle ruler, and although Twilight thinks that Celestia will dole out terrible punishments, the only punishments I have seen given by her are the Lesson Zero punishment (though I don't think that Celestia was very serious about punishing Twilight according to their dialog before the rest of the Mane Six burst in) and also her (harsh) banishment of her sister to the moon. Granted, it has been a thousand years since the banishment, and Celestia probably was not as wise then. Yet, the fanbase and most of the ponies in the show seem to give the impression of Celestia being unstoppable. Can someone explain to me why this is the most common impression of her?

I really do not understand this, either. I have a feeling it's just for teh lulz, to be honest.

 

People saw that she banished her sister for 1000 years and it just clicked that she was some kind of super ruler/Goddess/whatever that banishes people in the blink of an eye. I really don't think anyone is all too serious about it, but I may be wrong.

Here's the thing. The ponies hold her to a high regard so most of the fandom will do the same thing. I personally don't like Celestia, and I don't see how they can hold her at such a high honor.

Powerful doesn't appear to be the best term for the title. I think you mean 'Tyrannical ruler' or 'Harsh ruler'.

 

The more regal and ideal the person in charge, the more fun it is to poke fun at them and pretend they are something they aren't. Exhibit A: Feld0's professional and awesome at what he does, and he's got more memes based on him than any non-official character I've ever seen. Some people take these jokes and run with it, calling, treating and depicting Celestia in a negative, evil fashion constantly. Then they reinforce their beliefs when they see things in the show that they deem to be 'proof' of 'Trollestia/Tyrranical Celestia's reign'.

I dunno, maybe because she's like, really, really old? You gotta respect your elders right? Besides, she has a history of being a powerful pony, plus she's one of the only pegasus unicorns besides her sister and Cadance, and she's ruled Equestria for the longest time.

Celestial is a...unique...character that really as we know has to raise the sun (although pinkie said the earth was round, so some things don't start to add up) and be the immortal monarch. She's also the mentor of Twilight. One reason she is looked at as a great ruler in the show is because she took down discord thousands of years ago and encased or made him into stone. Then she ended the chaos and brought peace, thus many ponies look up to her for that, she has also helped stop other evil. In the fanbase its just personal opinion.

Celestia raises the sun every day, or at least keeps it going. Don't tell me that's not an indication of phenomenal power.

 

I'd have to agree that because all the ponies in the show treat her like a monarch to be feared or at least respected (although she's not exactly the ruler that political theorists like Hobbes, say, would have imagined) so it's natural for the fans to believe that she is so very powerful.

 

More importantly though, is that her position and duties inherently require a lot of power. Because the sun is such an important part of the ponies' lives, it would make sense for Celestia, who has an unquestioned monopoly for that job, to be seriously considered not only beneficial, but compelling, as if their whole lives were dependent on her whim.

Because celestia is the all powerful and unstoppable ruler that took twilight in just because she caused havoc in the audition room. Plus she at least somewhat seems to know what shes doing... ( telling twilight to open door only she(and dischord) can in the first episode of season 2)

Personally I don’t get "Benevolent Leader" when watching segments with Celestia. I get the impression that something funky is going on and I am of the opinion that she's losing her powers.

 

1. She was interrupted in returning when Nightmare moon arrived. She knew in advance that this was going to happen which is why she needed Twilight and her friend to be chosen by the EOH

 

2. Discords returned when she expected him to be locked away forever.

 

3. Her locking spell was compromised

 

4. She hesitated in confronting Crystalas and lost in direct battle.

 

She's like most leaders in that she's doing the best she can but I also I think she knows her time is limited.

I'm guessing it's because for a thousand years, she rose the sun and moon,alone. giving her time to evolve into a more powerful member of pony Parliament. If Luna where here in this period, I'm pretty sure Celestia wouldn't be as treasured. (the moar you know)

Powerful =/= harsh. Yeah, she's a powerhouse, she canceled out one of Twi's spells like it was nothing and keeps celestial bodies in motion. She only lost to Chrysalis because Chrysalis was powered up by love, which is limitless. It's like saying Thor is weak because he can't beat Hulk.
